Of six highway defects reported on Saturday, the Council has agreed to address only two of them.
Further work is promised on Gladstone Street and School Street.
Elsewhere it seems there is no prospect of repairs on Walker Drive, Vincent Way, Hotham Avenue or Lowfields Drive
Lowfields Drive – Council won’t fill in potholes
The Council seems to be no closer to bitmacing the small section of verge on Kingsway West, near Newbury Avenue, which has been subject to overrun damage for over 5 years now
We understand that the Council is considering using the little Green Lane garage area as a compound during housing modernisation works. A storage unit has already appeared there
There has been some persistent rain in York. This has brought some issues with flooding and surface water.
Ponding near the shops on Cornlands Road. Possible blocked gulley makes access difficult for pedestrians Verges are vulnerable to vehicle over-run damage when waterloggedWeather a challenge for building works in the areaPerhaps not surprisingly given the pressures on Council services, some autumn leaves haven’t been swept up yetThe former play area on Kingsway West has now been grassed over but access barriers are still in place. Still no sign of progress on a replacement although the Council has made provision for the project in its budget for the next financial year.
Please take the opportunity to report any blocked drains or other issues which may be a hazard for residents. Click here
The current icy spell is taking its toll on poorly maintain road and path surfaces. The Council recently agred to undertake some repairs on teb potholed – and well used – section of Foxwood Lane near the sports area. The work has yet to be completed and the potholes continue to pose a hazard particularly for users of two wheeled transport.
Foxwood Lane potholes are a safety hazard
The Council promised to repair damaged roads, paths and verges when the building works on Newbury Avenue and Ascot Way were completed. There is little sign of progress.
Kingsway West traffic cushions now breaking up Kingsway West- Newbury Avenue verge has been damaged by delivery vehicles
Footpaths on the even numbered side of Kingsway West are also in poor condition. Subsidence means that they lean at an angle, adding to problems cause by numerous reinstatements. Not for the first time, we have reported poor rubbish storage, and some fly tipping, to the rear of the Front Street shops.
The Council will be publishing its highways resurfacing programme for the next financial year shortly. There is now a major backlog of work in the area. It is not just potholes that need filling. Large areas of carriageway and several footpaths need patching or resurfacing.
The present Council promised to reconstruct all highways in the City, so it will be interesting to see the extent of next years programme.
School Street remains in poor condition.Verge damage in Dijon Avenue
Problems with verge damage in the Dijon Avenue area have escalated since building work started on the Lowfield site
Its over 3 years since the York Council looked at the problem of vehicle damage to grass verges. Alengthy reportpromised improvements not least in taking action against drivers who carelessly damaged verges.
Verge damage was costing taxpayers around £35 per sq metre to fix. Enforcement action was promised and some “Ward Committees” also said they would use their delegated budget to provide lay-bys.
St Stephens Road
There has sadly been little progress. Problem locations such as the flats on Thoresby Roadcontinue to be blighted. Promised lay-bys have not materialised. There has been no enforcement action, no protective bollards or “eco grid” surfacing have been installed.
Drivers do need somewhere to park their vehicles but the Council’s response has been glacial recently.
Gale Lane carriageway breaking up. The section is only a few metres away from the area that was resurfaced a few months ago. The Council really should have resurfaced as far as the junctionWidespread damage to verges and speed humps in the Kingsway area blamed on heavy building plant. The Newbury Avenue bungalows should be finished at the end of the year so hopefully some repairs will then take place. Dumped fridge in hedgerow at Chesney FieldMore dumping in back Foxwood Lane& again in the little Green Lane garage areaGraffiti in Howe Street area. This will prove to be a test of the Councils new graffiti removal processes which were implemented a few weeks ago. Still a lot of leaf fall in some streets. This is Windsor Garth. Streets now need mechanical sweeping before mulch becomes embedded.Litter in hedgerows near Doherty Walk. The Councils street cleansing systems still aren’t working with problems on several estates and at some shopping centres.More litter!
As we wait for the inevitable icy weather residents are being urged to check that their local salt bins are full and free of litter.
Salt bin locations on “Local View” web site
Salt bin locations are plotted on the Street View services map Click here to access. Look under “street care” then “salt bins funded by CYC”. Councillors should have completed their pre-winter checks by now, but some may have been missed.
Another recurrent problem that will arise, as wetter weather becomes more frequent, is damage to grass verges. This is sometimes caused by poor parking but also is prevalent on street corners where large vehicles leave the carriageway.
Some wards make use of a delegated budget to provide off street “eco grid” style parking lay-bys.
Others use the option of hardening vulnerable areas like road junctions. Again matrix surfacing conserves green space and good drainage while protecting verges from damage.
Large scale building works have made verges in the Kingsway West area particularly vulnerable to vehicle run over damage this year
Verges and hydrant markers have been damaged by cable works in the Stuart Road area. One verge at least is a potential hazard for pedestrians. We have asked for repairs.
Garage in Bramham Road boarded up. We hope that the Council will act quickly to re-let the unit. There are a lot of people of the waiting list. We’ve asked for the detritus to be removed from the garage area and for local damaged verges to be repaired.
