Some good news with the weeds which disfigured the offices on the Front Street link road having been cleared of weeds.

A sofa has been dumped in the Cornlands Road park play area. It is surrounded by rubbish. The issue has been reported to the Council but it is a shame that an area intended for use by younger children should be defaced in this way. Hopefully the Police will be able to increase patrols in the area.
Elsewhere at the recycling centre in the Acomb Car Park rubbish has been fly tipped. We’ve asked for the area to be cleaned up and for some of the recycling bins to be repainted.
Follwowing action by Andrew Waller, the telecoms cabinet on Bramham Road has been secured. The cabinet had been attacked by vandals
Nettles have been trimmed back for the public footpath on Foxwood Lane. Is a problem each year. The area needs to be added to the early season weed killing programme
New fencing erected today on Walton Place – Grange Lane snicket

Road resurfaced, white lines refreshed and a “gateway” painted on the highway near the entrance to Westfield School. School crossing patrol also working efficiently. Good work by the school and ward Councillors
Hardcore has been put down under the access gate to the Westfield Place sports field. Previously the area had been subject to flooding. More good work by the Council

Responding to a recent survey, local residents had said that litter and weed growth were one of their main concerns.
Good therefore to see this week that the Chapelfields estate is looking much tidier. Most gutters are weed free although the recent wet/warm weather will likely prompt further growth. Litter also seems to be under control.
We’ve reported one or two other public service issues that require attention.
The Council have been asked to give start date for promised additional lay-by on Bramham Ave. The provision of off street parking will make access easier for buses, bin lorries etc.

Trolley storage area on Acomb Car park needs a good clean
Thoresby Road
The Council says it is considering how vehicle speeds on Thoresby Road can be controlled. It will discuss the issues involved at a meeting taking place on 13th September.
Details of the proposals are not yet available.
However, the street – which contains around 200 homes – is not a through route, so much of the problem arises from the use of vehicles by residents and their visitors.
In the past, physical works have not been consider practical because of the narrow width of the carriageway and the fact that on street parking has created a “chicane” effect which has slowed the speed of some vehicles.
There are plans to provide an additional off street parking layby at the low numbered end of the street.
Separately the Council has decided to back a plan to designate the rural part of Grange Lane as a “restricted byway”. This means that the sections on both sides of the A1237 would be accessible by, not only pedestrians, but also cyclists, horse riders and those driving a “horse and cart”.
It is not clear how much additional maintenance expenditure would be incurred by the change (parts of the route tend to get overgrown) while safety concerns at the by pass junctions remain a real concern.
Weed killing operation on paths and in gutters has been criticised as poor this year.
Clearly it is a big problem in snickets.
The latest change in weather (damper) may make this more obvious.
We understand that, following complaints from Cllr Sheena Jackson, the Foxwood area will be retreated this week.
The York Civic Trust have confirmed that the restoration work that they plan to do on the Acomb War Memorial will be restricted to repairing and cleaning the stonework. Some of the lettering on the monument will also be repainted. The work is partly being sponsored by the Trust with a contribution from the City of York Council. The work is being managed by volunteers.
The scope of the refurbishment falls short of level of work which residents had hoped could be achieved before the Centenary of the end of WW1 which takes place on 11th November.
The original specification for the upgrade had included items like;
The “Friends of Acomb Green” are hoping to have a fund-raising event shortly but, if more work is to be commissioned, in the time available, it is likely that Council and Ward committee funding will be required.
The expectation was that the reinstatement of verges in the City following the UFO broadband works would have seen grass growing back by now. Recent rain has provided ideal growing conditions but there is little sign of life so far!
