The cable men cometh! Foxwood braced for months of roadworks
Cable laying operations in footpaths in the Foxwood area are due to start this week. The programme will then move into other parts of the Westfield area.
We will provide updates on the programme as they become available.
Cable laying in Foxwood – More information
TalkTalk have now confirmed that they will not be digging up recently resurfaced footpaths in the Foxwood area.
Instead they will hold off installing their 1000mbs broadband service for at least 2 years in streets like Bellhouse Way, Acomb Wood Drive and the Ainsty Park estate.
The company does say that they have a free 24 hour care line where residents can call to find out more, report an issue, make a complaint etc.
The number is: 0800 542 8073
It seems likely that in addition to Thornwood Covert and Bradley Drive whee work will start on Monday, we understand that the company will then move on to
- Huntsmans Walk
- Foxwood Lane
- Hinton Avenue
- Lydham Court
- Doherty Walk
53% of road drains found to be blocked in York Council survey
£5 million cost to upgrade whole system
Considerable concern was expressed in 2015 when it was discovered that large areas of highway were flooding during wet weather. Many residents complained that the reduced gulley cleaning service – introduced by the last Labour led Council – was inadequate. The City has over 42,000 gulleys.
In 2016 and 2017 there were major surface water problems in several parts of York.
The led the new Councillor – Andrew Waller – responsible for surface water drainage systems to institute a review of standards.
The initial findings of the comprehensive survey into the effectiveness of drainage systems will now be presented to a meeting next week
The report says,
“To date more than 35,000 of the 43,690 known gullies have been logged, investigated and cleansed as part of the capital funded investigation process, a flood risk assessment process has been previously carried out to ensure key assets have been prioritised.
53% of all assets were found to be blocked but significant work has ensured the majority of the system investigated to date is operating effectively, however more than 900 assets will require wider engineering works to ensure they can operate effectively”.
With many gullies now cleared, the report goes on to say,
“Subsequent heavy rainfall events have given rise to reduced numbers of complaints and reports of localised flood incidences, this is a clear indication of the success of this process, however, significant rainfall such as experienced on the 23rd August this year can still overwhelm a well maintained and operable drainage system as their design capacity would be compromised”.
The findings of an investigation into surface water ponding on Acomb Green is included in the papers (see below)
Ainsty Park footpaths to be resurfaced from 11th December
Talk/Talk ultra high speed cable laying starts on Monday in Foxwood
The Council plans to resurface footpaths in The Gallops, Stirrup Close, Houndsway and Redcoat Way starting on 11th December. Residents will receive a letter shortly explaining what access restrictions will be in place and asking that overgrowth be cut back from the public footpath.
This scheme is programmed to take 11 weeks, weather permitting.
The work consists of excavating the current tarmac surfacing and laying two new layers of tarmac. Selected road kerbs are to be replaced and tactile crossing points are to be installed.
The Council will take the opportunity to offer residents within the area to be reconstructed a discounted extension or new vehicle crossing to be constructed as part of this scheme, at cost. Anyone wishing to take advantage of this offer should contact the Council, before construction commences. Existing vehicle crossings will be resurfaced with the current dimensions at no cost to residents.
Broadband cables
Separately the Talk/Talk broadband contractors will be moving into the area. This has caused some concern about whether newly resurfaced footpaths may be damaged. We understand that the residents Association and local Councillors are checking this issue.
The cabling work has recently been completed in the Woodthorpe area with minor inconvenience to residents.
We doubt that many residential users really need ultra high speed broadband but heavy users of UHD TV may want to check out the Talk/Talk web site click.
The area already has access to high speed cable links provided by Virgin.
Leeman Road night time closure from tomorrow (Monday) – bus diversions
Repair works to Parliament Street ahead of festive season
City of York Council is carrying out essential repair works to Parliament Street this Sunday (12 November) ahead of the busy festive season.
All shops and businesses will be open as usual while the work takes place from Pavement down to Shambles Market.
The council is acting to remove the growing risk of slips and trips by temporarily replacing 300 square metres of flagstones with tarmac, before relaying the flagstones early next year.
Laying the temporary tarmac surface now, and delaying the more disruptive and lengthier flag relaying work, means the area can be safe and welcoming to the large number of city-centre visitors over the festive season
Thanet Road Toucan crossing finished but Council neglects essential work
The Toucan crossing at the junction of Kingsway West and Thanet Road has been completed and is working.
Unfortunately the Council didn’t take the opportunity – when plant was in the area – to resurface the hammerhead on Kingsway West which is very uneven and represents a hazard for cyclists.
The change coincides with the introduction of a 20 mph speed limit outside the Lidl store
Sadly the Council has also failed to upgrade the bollard on the Foxwood lane cycle path approach to the crossing. The wooden bollard has been a source of complaint for several years. It lacks effective reflectors and, during foggy weather or on dark nights in heavy rain, it becomes virtually invisible for cyclists. The expectation had been that the council would either remove the bollard altogether or at least replace it with one that could be seen at night.
Bad week for traffic congestion in York
It’s been a bad week for traffic congestion in York. Mostly seems to be down to road works with some – like the installation of a new pedestrian crossing on Thanet Road, near the Foxwood Lane junction running several days behind schedule.
The Councils twitter links seem to be off the pace with neither @iTravel nor @york_travel offering much help.

Thanet Road Toucan crossing nears completion
The weather has been against the contractors this week, but it looks like they will finish installing the new Toucan crossing at the end of Kingsway West this week. The Council also intends to install speed humps on Thanet Road so the work will resume later in the year. We hope that they will resurface the hammerhead in Kingsway West and remove the dangerous post on the cycle path while they are in the area.
A littler further down Gale Lane the yellow lines in the Stuart Road hammerhead have been renewed.
