Liberal Democrat Councillor encourages residents to report treacherous potholes

Cllr Sheena Jackson, Liberal Democrat Ward Councillor for Westfield, is urging residents to report troublesome potholes on their local roads.

Across York, some sections of the highway have deteriorated due to poor weather conditions and general wear.  Whilst many of these issues are reported and subsequently repaired, there are still some areas which go unreported and unattended.

Residents can report potholes in their communities directly to the Council, even if they are relatively small in size.  In turn, this can help the Council improve upon its current highways database, even if the potholes are too small to be filled at the time of reporting.

Cllr Sheena Jackson, Liberal Democrat Ward Member for Westfield, said:

“Potholes are a regular nuisance for drivers and cyclists, and if left untouched, can deteriorate into serious hazards for road users. The first step in repairing our roads is to ensure all potholes are reported.”

“Recently, I had noticed large and dangerous potholes in my Ward.  Given the size of the pothole, I reported both immediately to the Council and within in a week, they were both filled.”

“I want to encourage all residents across York to do the same and report potholes in their local areas.  This can help build the Council’s intelligence of its highways and better yet, lead to improved maintenance of our roads.”

“I would urge anyone to report these issues directly to the Council, or to their local Ward Councillors.”

Footpath repairs start on Foxwood Lane on 26th February

Some parking restrictions  expected

The City of York Council will start work week commencing 26th February 2018 to reconstruct the footway shown on the plan below.  This scheme is programmed to take 2 weeks, weather permitting.

The work consists of excavating the current tarmac surfacing, laying two new layers of tarmac and reconstructing tactile crossing points where required.  Parking will be suspended during working hours.

Anyone for a shower?

There are still too many blocked drainage gullies in parts of York. This mornings rain demonstrated the scale of the problem with flooding at the bottom of Hamilton Drive East a particular hazard. There were similar if less spectacular problems on Nigel Grove and Foxwood Lane. All have been reported for attention

Huge delays on approaches to Crockey Hill Road works UPDATE

UPDATE – Apparently the Council are to close Wheldrake Lane in an attempt to reduce delays on the A19 this evening 

Drivers are complaining about huge delays for peak hours traffic as a result of the Councils road works at Crockey Hill

Some residents are asking for the traffic light controlled restrictions to be lifted at peak times as alternative routes are also congested.

Work to improve the A19 Crockey Hill junction set to start

The Council  will be starting the second phase of work to improve the flow of traffic on the A19 south of York with works at the Crockey Hill junction with Wheldrake Lane starting on Sunday 14 January.

The work is expected to be completed by Friday 4 May. No work will take place over the Easter weekend, and the road will be operate as normal from 30 March to 3 April in a bid to minimise disruption to road users.

An extra southbound lane will be built on the approach to, and through the junction in a bid to ease rush-hour congestion heading south out of York, particularly at the A64 Fulford Interchange. The traffic lights in the area will also be improved.

Action being taken to deal with footpath, dumping and other issues in west York

Work on levelling footpaths on Front Street has started. A Ward Committee funded scheme aimed at providing level access from the Gale Farm Court area into the shopping area for those using disability scooters.

Litter at the top of Foxwood Lane has been reported

& the weather inevitably means that vehicles parking on verges will damage them. We hope that work on providing a lay-by on Askham Lane will start shortly

Shocking pictures of dumping to the rear of shops on Front Street. Cllr Sue Hunter is following up the issue.

Complaints are increasing about lack of maintenance of the Leeman Road Nature Reserve. There has been a lot of dumping, tree detritus blights surrounding streets and some public footpaths are obstructed.

 

Wetherby Road roundabout – new layout proposals revealed

Chance to comment on plans to reduce outer ring road congestion

 City of York Council is asking for comments on new proposals to cut congestion and journey times on one of York’s busiest roads.

Residents and businesses have until Friday 2 February to comment on designs to upgrade the outer ring road’s Wetherby Road roundabout – one of seven roundabouts on A1237 and part of a £38m programme of improvements set for the next four years.

The roundabout upgrades will mean more lanes and space on the approaches and exits, and improvements for pedestrians and cyclists. “Where possible” the road layouts will be designed to accommodate a potential future scheme to bring the outer ring road up to dual carriageway standard.

The Wetherby Road roundabout improvement works are planned for early Summer in 2018, although some site clearance work could start earlier.

Plans can be viewed online at www.york.gov.uk/yorr, at the council’s West Offices on Station Rise, YO1 6GA, or at two special public exhibitions at Acomb Explore Library on Front Street, YO24 3BZ on Thursday 18 January and Monday 22 January from 3-7pm

All comments will be reviewed and changes to the design made where possible.  The decision on the final layout will be taken at a public Executive Member for Transport and Planning Decision Session meeting in March 2018.

The news comes as West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Investment Committee met to discuss the project and approve the progress of the £3.6m first phase of roundabout improvements earlier this week. Full programme funding is coming through the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s West Yorkshire plus Transport Fund, and the Leeds City Region Growth Deal – a £1bn package of government investment to accelerate growth and create jobs across Leeds City Region.
