Shoppers given later Park and Ride services this Christmas

City of York Council and First York are making it easier for residents and visitors to stay in the city centre longer and take advantage of extended shop opening times in the run up to Christmas with a later running Park & Ride service.

York Dial and Ride fleet extended to serve Monks Cross, John Lewis etc

York’s Dial & Ride service has been expanded thanks to a new bus which gives passengers more opportunities to travel to Vangarde and Monks Cross shopping parks.

dial and ride bus

Over 15,000 journeys were made last year on Dial & Ride buses by residents who may find it difficult to use standard buses due to age or mobility issues. The new bus, with full wheelchair accessibility, will allow even more residents to get out and about thanks to the personalised service that it provides. Dial & Ride drivers are trained to give assistance to passengers tailored to their needs.

Cllr Ian Gillies, Executive Member for Transport and Planning, said: “Dial & Ride allows residents who may not be able to use standard bus services the opportunity to move in and around the city easily. The addition of an extra vehicle will allow even more people the chance to use this fantastic service.”

The new bus has been funded by the  Oakgate Group, developers of the Vangarde Shopping Park

York’s Dial & Ride is operated by York Wheels on behalf of City of York Council. York Wheels’ operations manager, Ruth Potter said: “We are all really pleased to have the new bus. The extra capacity means that we can now offer runs to all the shops at Vangarde. Our new timetable also has a run to a shopping outlet or into town every day in every Ward in the City and we have also increased the choice of destinations for many wards.”

Dial & Ride places are limited and must be booked at least 24 hours in advance by calling 01904 551441. Lines are open 9am – 12 noon, Monday to Friday. Bookings can be made up to two weeks in advance.

York Council backtracks on bus support

The York Council has withdrawn its plans to make changes to the funding criteria for uneconomic bus services in the City.

Bus weight lifter timthumbTwo months ago it said it would consider

Three options; two which would guarantee minimum levels of bus service to areas within the York boundary where the council currently supports a bus service (and for which no commercial alternatives exist), or a third option to retain the current criteria, which does not guarantee any minimum service level”.

The item has now been withdrawn from the “forward programme” without explanation.

“87% of York bus services running on time” says Council

Relative too many other areas, York’s bus services have achieved higher passenger numbers (per head of population)  for almost 15 years.

Although down from the high of 12 million passengers carried in 2006, stage carriage services still managed to attract 11 million users last year. On top of this, the expansion in Park and Ride continues with 4.5 million using the enlarged network last year.

At a time when the annual DpT statistics see bus services losing passengers in some other Cities, this is a cause for some relief in York and the Council might claim justification in celebrating its relative success through a media release (see below right)

It is being disingenuous in suggesting that passengers can expect to wait less than a minute for bus services to arrive or that timetabled services are 87% reliable. That simply isn’t the case at the times of the day, and seasons of the year, when people travel most.

The claims are based on DpT published statistics which can be found by clicking here for waiting times and here for passenger numbers

The reliability figures are the result of a one off check undertaken by the local authority in the autumn of each year (usually the least busy time on the highways network).

Sadly with the York Councils supposedly independent scrutiny committee system bogged down with trivia, it seems unlikely that anomalies like these will ever be challenged. Most scrutiny committee chairs seem to back away for even asking for regular quality of service reports. That leaves consumers in the dark – none more so than on bus service reliability.

The sooner that the figures collected each day by the “Your Next Bus” computer systems are routinely published, the sooner we are likely to get a more candid analysis of both the Councils performance and that of York’s bus operators.

First York announce bus service changes

Number 4 to loop through Skeldergate – direct link between Acomb and York University broken

First buses have responded to complaints about unreliability and lack of capacity on some bus services.

A major change to the number 4 – the best used bus service in the City – means that it will no longer travel to the University. Instead it will loop through Skeldergate and over Skeldergate Bridge to reach its new terminus on Clifford Street. There are frequent buses from there to the University.

The last change to the route of the number 4  -which took the service on a meandering journey through Tang Hall before reaching Heslington – was heavily criticised by passengers. On occasions 3 or 4 buses would arrive in Acomb in convoy. We hope that the new service – which retains a 10 minute frequency during the day – will prove to more reliable when it is introduced on 22nd November.  The Sunday frequency will be 20 minutes while buses will continue to run every 30 minutes in the evening.

Some minor timetable changes are promised on the number 1 service which links Chapelfields to Wigginton. A twelve minute frequency is promised at peak times between Monday and Friday.

Other changes affect service 6 (which gets a direct link to York University) and service 10 which will run via Battlefields Way, while an additional morning service will be provided between Dunnington and York College on Tadcaster Road, with an early morning service between Bishopthorpe and the railway station also being introduced.

Residents invited to give their views on buses

On the busesCity of York Council is calling on York’s bus passengers to tell bus bosses their views on local services at a ‘bus surgery’ event on Parliament Street on Thursday 8 October, from 10am – 4pm.

The ‘bus surgery’ event will give residents a chance to speak with representatives from York’s bus providers including First York, Arriva and Transdev. The event will be held on a bus provided by First York giving people who don’t normally use busses a chance to look at one.
