Lendal Bridge fine refund scheme not working

Only 5500 motorists have so far applied for repayment of the fines – unlawfully imposed by Labour – on drivers using Lendal Bridge during the closure trial which started in August 2013.

Lendal Man

This represents only a little over 10% of the total penalty notices issued.

Labour have set an arbitrary deadline of the end of December 2014 by which applications for refunds must be made.

The responsible Cabinet member claims not to know where the applications originated and the suspicion remains that tourists and other visitors to the City remain largely unaware that the refunds are available.

As we have said before, the reputational damage to York is irreversible but we believe that the new “balanced” Council must take immediate steps, to write to all these who were fined, telling them about the refund process.

It also seems reasonable to remove the deadline for applications.

With Labour having lost their overall Council majority they will no longer be able to block a public Inquiry into the actions that they took during the Lendal Bridge fiasco

Separately the Council has confirmed that its appeal against a parallel ruling on fines imposed on Coppergate, using similar signage and enforcement methods, has still not been heard.

Currently no enforcement action is taking place of the Coppergate access restrictions.

Santa’s socks

York residents are being asked to put their best foot forward and make unique Santa’s Socks which will be filled with sweets and distributed by local food banks around the city.

The Santa’s Sock project, organised by the council’s York Learning team, is encouraging people to pull their creative socks up and have fun sewing, knitting, crocheting, up-cycling, felting, embellishing, stitching or sticking the socks. They can either be made at home or residents can attend one of the free creative workshops to learn new skills and make the stockings in a group.

State pension set to rise by 2.5 per cent next year

Pensioners will benefit from a 2.5 per cent increase in their state pension thanks to the Liberal Democrat Triple Lock guarantee.

Figures out today (14 October) show that inflation is below target meaning that the basic state pension will be boosted by 2.5 per cent next year.

The Triple Lock guarantee means that pensions will increase with inflation, earnings or 2.5 per cent – whichever is highest.

Commenting on the inflation figures, Liberal Democrat Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander said:

“This below target inflation number is good news for everyone, but will help pensioners in particular as the Liberal Democrat flagship ‘Triple Lock’ policy will kick in to give an above inflation pension increase.

“The Triple Lock delivers a pension rise of whichever is the greater of average earnings, inflation or 2.5%.

“This means that next year the basic state pension will rise by 2.5% or £2.85 a week.  With Liberal Democrats in Government the basic state pension has risen by over £950.

“This shows that pensioners are at the heart of our Liberal Democrat vision of a stronger economy and a fairer society.

“They’ve done their bit for society and paid their dues over a lifetime. Our Triple Lock policy ensures our country does right by them.

“This is in stark contrast to life under the Conservatives who broke the link between pensions and earnings in the Thatcher years, and life under Labour when pensioners were insulted with rises as low as 75p.”

LibDems make final appeal to Westfield electors

New Chapelfields Focus published

Polls are showing a swing from Labour to Liberal Democrat candidate Andrew Waller in the final run up to Thursday’s by election.

Former Westfield Councillor and local resident Andrew Waller needs only 139 additional votes to overtake the Labour candidate.

Andrew has issued a final leaflet and appealed for a big turn out on Thursday.

“It is important that the result is decisive. It is the first opportunity that residents have had in York to give a verdict on James Alexander’s, mistake prone, administration”.

Many residents are saying that the Council needs more experienced members as it faces a period where no party will have overall control.

Walk to School Week

School pupils around York are getting ready to take Walk to School Week in their stride when it takes place from 13-17 October.

Twenty nine schools and 8,700 pupils across the city are taking part in this year’s campaign to encourage even more children to walk, cycle or scoot to school.walking bus 2

The school that gets the highest number of pupils walking, cycling or scooting throughout the week will win the coveted Jack Archer award and £400, partly funded by Age UK.

‘Scoot to School’ day will also take place on Wednesday 15. To encourage students to scoot the school with the most pupils who scoot to school on that day will win a Scooter Pod worth £300 donated by CyclePod.

It is recommended that children aged five to sixteen do at least sixty minutes of physical activity that gets their heart beating faster than usual and they need to do it everyday to burn off calories and prevent them storing up excess fat in the body.

Regular activity is also important for adults and it is recommended that adults make sure they’re active for just 30 minutes each day, or 150 minutes a week.

The scheme is also targeted at families who normally take the car, and encourages them to consider walking or cycling to school instead.
