500 signature petition says “improve our neighbourhood”

Acomb residents ask for Council action

Petition June 2014

Over 500 residents living in the Chapelfields, Front Street, Cornlands Road, Gale Lane and Lowfields areas have signed a petition asking for improvements in their local neighbourhood.

The petition will be handed in to the York Council at its meeting later today by Cllr Lynn Jeffries.

The residents are concerned about the quality of public service provided in their neighbourhoods by the Council and particularly highlight issues with roads, footpaths, damaged fences, inadequate street cleansing, increasing instances of anti-social behaviour, inadequate car parking, weed growth in gulleys and on footpaths.

In some cases resident have added in their own concerns with one recurrent comment being poor access arrangements for people restricted by their use of wheelchairs or mobility scooters.

In this respect poor footpaths/lack of dropped kerbs in the Front Street/Lowfields area has been mentioned by several residents.

The petition will be considered later in the year by the responsible Council committee,

Small grant allocated to Westfield Ward

The Council has allocated (at a behind closed doors meeting) what it describes as a “credit pot” to “deprived” wards.

The allocations are

Behind closed doors logo

  • Westfield – £4260
  • Clifton – £4241
  • Heworth – £4296
  • Hull Road – £3342
  • Guildhall £2818

The Council says that on 6 March 2012 the Cabinet established a “credits pot” to be allocated only to wards with the highest levels of deprivation to be used in line with the criteria for ward funding, to deliver on the ward priorities.

No-money-clipart

This decision distributes the pot to the 5 wards in proportion to their population.

The amount compares to the £60,000 made available each year to wards like Westfield when the Liberal Democrats were in control of the York Council.

NB.  Labour are scrapping all financial assistance to local community centres in 2015.

Latest Westfield Ward profile – more long term unemployed than in rest of York

The latest Westfield ward profile figures which can be downloaded by clicking here, shows that the area has the largest number of   people living on Job   Seekers allowance.

click for full details

329 residents (3.4%) are claiming job seekers allowance,   the highest in York

Most workers continue to be employed in the retail and   social care areas.

The figure reinforces the views of those who believe that   the area has been neglected by the Labour Council during the last 3 years.

There is a need for more investment in the area including   a major regeneration of the Front Street area.

Life expectancy in the ward for males is significantly   below the City average.

The figures do show that by 2010 (when census data was   taken) people living in the area had much better  educational; qualifications than a decade   earlier.

Beaconsfield Street back lane bollards mystery

Bollards back Beaconsfield Street

Bollards back Beaconsfield Street

A set of new removable bollards has appeared on part of the Beaconsfield Street back lane.

We understand that there was no consultation with residents living in Beaconsfield Mews whose properties back onto the lane in question.

The bollards make vehicular access to the rear of the properties awkward.

There is a right of way along the lane

Europe bid to extend Kingsway Project

Behind closed doors logo

Somewhat belatedly, the York Council has decided to apply for European funding to help revive and extend the successful Kingsway Project which pioneered anti poverty activities in York towards the end of the last decade.

The Council is seeking £1.2 million from Europe with a matching amount likely to come from local resources.

The main neighbourhoods, which might benefit, include the Heworth, Hull Road, Guildhall, and Westfield Wards

The decision was taken today. As usual it was taken behind closed doors and without any meaningful consultation with local residents.

The Kingsway Project was a victim of Labour’s 2011 Council election victory. Shortly after their success they jettisoned Ward Committee budgeting which led to the Westfield area losing £50,000 a year in locally determined investment.

The report (which contains a lot of jargon) can be read here.

Latest Planning applications – Former Knavesmire Nursing home (The Green) site plans published

Care home on The Green Acomb

The long awaited proposals for the former Knavesmire Nursing home site on The Green have been submitted to the Council. They show the main building being retained and converted into 4 flats.

Elsewhere on the site the extension will be demolished and 4 bungalows will be built. Some significant works to the trees on the site are also proposed.

The application will be welcomed by many as the building has been empty for around 4 years while the overgrown trees have blocked out much of the light in the area.
