Design and make soft furnishings for a child’s bedroom

Soft FurnishingsOver the course, we will look at the techniques to personalise and furnish a child’s bedroom, including making a pillow case, applique cushion cover, lamp shade and pin board.
We will finish by making a fleece soft toy.

You will be taught basic sewing skills on the machine and use the machine to complete most of the course projects.

Please bring a notebook, pen, and a folder for handouts.
Also, bring along 50cm of cotton fabric for the first session and a basic sewing kit (needles, thread, measuring tape and scissors).

All other requirements for the course will be discussed during the first session.

There may be additional costs for materials supplied by the tutor and for students purchasing their own fabrics.

HMD-Leaflet -2016Holocaust Memorial Day’s vision is to learn from the past to create a safer future.

Residents and visitors are welcome to join in the talks, walks, films, theatre, exhibitions and commemoration events taking place at various venues in York, which embrace this year’s theme ‘Don’t stand by’.

Every year, 27 January marks Holocaust Memorial Day. On and around this date people from all over the world come together to remember the destruction and devastation caused by the Holocaust, genocides and persecutions on a worldwide scale.  

York’s Holocaust Memorial Day programme engages with partners both inside and outside of the city to create a programme of events throughout January.

Events include:

  • Holocaust Memorial Day Civic Event: Sunday 31 Jan from 5.45pm at York Explore, Library Square. Everyone is welcome at this event of short talks, exhibitions, discussion and film.  

Films:

  • ‘Paragraph 175’ on Saturday 23 Jan at South Bank Community Centre, Clements Hall. 
  • ‘My Nazi Legacy’ on Wednesday 27 January at City Screen. 
    ‘Woman in Gold’ on Friday 29 January at Clements Hall.
  • ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ on Friday 29 January at the Community Cinema, New Earswick Folk Hall.

Theatre: 

  • ‘They Kill Us for their Sport’ at the Guildhall on Sunday 24 January

Story telling:

  • Shonaleigh. The Diamond Girl and the Goat-Horn Bee on Wednesday 27 January in Theatre Studio 1, York St John University

  • Demystifying accounting concepts
  • What is cash flow and what does it mean to your club?
  • Budgeting – Why does it matter?
  • Creating a budget for your club, who should be involved.
  • Effectively communicating your club’s finances.

Power FootballHeart warming community event for anyone with a physical disability that loves the beautiful game of football. This event will help to launch the local Jorvik Warriors regular sessions.

BookkeepingThoughts of bookkeeping can strike fear into many people who want to start a small business.  Start this course with us and learn the basics.

You will be shown how to keep manual accounts and a follow on course is available to teach you how to keep electronic records using SAGE accounting software later in the year. 

Both courses can give you a qualification and give you the skills to put systems in place such as simple financial records – it simply involves detailing business income and expenditure from the outset and keeping accurate records.                                            

As well as being a legal requirement (you must retain your financial records for six years), staying on top of your bookkeeping will help you to monitor your cash flow.
