Urbie bus sessions on Chapelfields Estate

Westfield Ward Committee has dedicated a pot of funding from their 2016 to 2017 ward budget towards provision of activities for young people on Chapelfields Estate.

Part of this funding has been used to commission Urbie bus sessions at St Aiden’s Church.

The first session is on Friday 30 June 2017 between 7pm and 9pm. Sessions will continue every Friday for the next 4 weeks, after which the provision will be reviewed.

Urbie is a fun place for young people to engage in craft activities, watch films, play board games, take part in sports activities and somewhere to go and talk.

Youth workers will be encouraging young people in the area to come along.

This is the first time the bus will be used by The Rock of York after acquiring it via asset transfer from the City of York Council.

Community campaign tackles loneliness and isolation in York

loneliness A project, which has been supported by the York council, will showcase how students, residents and older people can engage to tackle loneliness and isolation in communities at an event on 9 November.

The event will see the launch of a film which will tell the story of how young students used life stories as a way to engage and befriend older people living within their local community through sharing memories.

The council worked in partnership with University of York students, Minds in Motion, Inspired Youth, Woolnough House Care Home and The Peoples Health trust.

“Life Stories – Connecting Lives Through Life Stories”, an Inspired Youth film, will highlight the impact and importance of life story work on the lives of people living with dementia and help to reduce loneliness and isolation.

The film will provide an insight into the benefits and impact of life stories, both on the lives of the residents of Woolnough House and the student volunteers who dedicate their time to building relationships with residents and exploring life stories.

The film will premiere at the Tang Hall Community centre on Wednesday 9 November and it is hoped that the project will act as a catalyst and highlight how local communities can work together and engage with people to reduce loneliness and isolation.

Read Regional.: Meet the writer Chris Killen

York Explore Library : Sat 23 Apr :

5.00pm 6.00pm : Free

Apr 23_WBN_Chris KillenChris Killen’s second novel is a triangular love story set at a time when the internet is always with you – at once offering to play Cupid, and wreak havoc… ultimately, it’s the un-glamour of the internet, and the un-romance of real real life, that Killen is interested in showing.

Chris Killen was born in 1981 in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, and currently lives in Manchester. He has an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Manchester, and returned as the University’s Writing Fellow at the Centre for New Writing in 2009. He has lived in Manchester for just over 10 years, and worked as a bookseller at both Waterstone’s and Blackwell University Bookshop.

His first novel, The Bird Room, was published in 2009 by Canongate Books. In 2012, alongside the novelists Joe Stretch and Socrates Adams, he co-wrote, co-directed and acted in the comedy feature film Wizard’s Way, which won best comedy feature at the London Independent Film Festival and the Discovery Award at LoCo (The London Comedy Film Festival). Remake rights have been purchased by Jack Black’s production company. His second novel, In Real Life, was published (again by Canongate) in January, 2015.

Tickets can be booked in person at any library, or phone 01904 552828 or visit https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/read-regional-writer-chris-killen-tickets-20124103736?aff=es2

What’s on in York – A Forgotten Local hero? Alcuin of York and his World

York Explore Library :

Wed 20 Apr: 6.15pm – 7.45pm :

Apr 20_AlcuinAn introduction to Alcuin of York, his activities, and the York of his time. The lecture will explore the forgotten glory of York between the Romans and the Vikings

Alcuin is remembered in York today by a street-name, a college, and a wing of a library. His city, York in the Anglian era, has been largely forgotten, eclipsed by Romans and Vikings. The eighth-century, the era when Alcuin lived, is often referred to as part of the ‘Dark Ages.’  Who was Alcuin?  What did he do?  Why does he matter? And what kind of world did he live in?

This talk will introduce Alcuin’s life and world, exploring his roots in York, his achievements, why they might matter today.

This is a unique opportunity to learn more about the importance of Alcuin of York from a leading expert in the field Dr Mary Garrison from York University
