Beagle FC kick off with 2-2 draw

Foxwood’s new football team, Beagle FC, kicked off their Chesney Field fixtures with a 2-2 draw against Rufforth yesterday. The pub backed side were joined pre match by local Councillor Sheena Jackson.

Beagle FC’s next home fixture is on Saturday 8th September when they entertain Cawood. The match starts at 2:00pm.

Dog walkers please note: Please make every effort to ensure that dogs do not foul Chesneys Field. Poop scoop bins are provided.

Open air cinema in Deans Park from 27th August

The country’s leading producer of open-air cinema, The Luna Cinema, is coming to Dean’s Park for the first time this summer. With the stunning Gothic cathedral and beautiful stained glass windows providing the ultimate backdrop, it will make for a fabulous night of cinema under the stars.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is the first prequel of a series of films based the book of the same title and is one of the companion books to J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.

The movie is set in New York in 1926, seventy years before the Harry Potter series, and features Newton Scamander as a main character. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them tells us that Scamander had been travelling the world in research of magical creatures since 1918, culminating with the publication of his masterpiece in 1927.

Stonemasons and carvers from across the UK and Europe showcase their skills during a weekend- long celebration of the ancient craft

An international Stone Carving Festival, celebrating the ancient craft and showcasing the skills of stonemasons and carvers from across the UK and Europe, will take place in Dean’s Park this summer.

The festival will see the park transformed into a tented village with the Mason’s Marquee forming the centre-piece and hub for expert craftspeople to carve designs based on the theme ‘All creatures great and small’.

Festival-goers will be able to see world-class stonemasons and carvers at work, try their hand at stone carving and enjoy food and drink supplied by some of York’s finest producers. Music will be provided by York’s community of buskers and a range of craft based activities will also be available for children and families.

The event will close on Sunday 19 August with a stone auction at 3.30pm, giving visitors the chance to bid for some of the newly carved stone. Funds raised from the auction will be reinvested in caring for the cathedral.

The festival runs from 8am to 6pm on Saturday 18 August and from 8am to 5pm on Sunday 19 August.

The York Minster Stone Carving Festival runs for four days and includes a Stoneyard Open Day on Friday 17 August.

Waterstones York present Kate Atkinson, who will be returning to her original home city to celebrate the release of her new novel, Transcription. Kate will discuss this, and her other work, in conversation at York Explore library.

One of our finest novelists, Kate won the Whitbread Book of the Year Prize for her debut, Behind the Scenes at the Museum. Her four bestselling novels featuring Jackson Brodie became the BBC television series Case Histories. Her most recent novels, Life After Life and A God In Ruins, both won the Costa Novel Award and were critically acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic.

Anyone for Footy?

It looks like Foxwood is getting a revived football team.

A team – based at the Beagle pub on Foxwood Lane – will play their fixtures on Chesney’s Field this season. They will play in division 2 of the York league

We understand that they are always on the lookout for new players.

The Westfield Ward Committee have allocated £500 to help the team get off the ground.

The first fixture, against Rufforth, is taking place on Saturday 1st September starting at 2:00pm.

Come and meet the ladies of the house who prepared home cures for the family, servants and even the ‘deserving’ poor. Hear about the strange deaths recorded in the frequently published bills of mortality and the even stranger recipes for curing a sword wound, the flux and the ague.

The remedies they turned to were more horrible and varied than your imagination could ever supply.

As a last resort … you might even encounter the Georgian Surgeon who came equipped with an array of special tools but unfortunately no anaesthetic!
