Thoresby Road recycling not collected today

The York Council says,

“We are still working hard to catch up on garden waste collections and have managed to collect today from another 593 properties in the Tadcaster Road area.

Unfortunately, we were unable to collect garden waste in the Tang Hall area. If you live in Tang Hall and are affected by this please leave your green bin out for collection and we will collect it as soon as we can.

Despite the crew working beyond their shift, 200 properties on Thoresby Road Acomb did not receive a recycling collection today due to the volume of waste presented. The team will return to collect this tomorrow. Please present your recycling for collection by 7am Wednesday”.

15,000 tonnes of green waste collected by York Council last year

A new York Council report reveals that 12,649 tonnes of green (garden) waste was collected from households in the city last year. In addition 2,214 household waste sites generated a further 2.214 tonnes.

The cost of collecting the green waste was £515,000 while disposal cost £267,000.

The green waste is composted and made available free of charge for gardeners.

The Council says that if the green waste went to landfill it would cost taxpayers around £1.5 million. It would not be viable to burn the waste at the Allerton Park incinerator.

The amount of green waste collected for each York household is similar to that produced in the county as a whole. In York charges are only levied for additional bins.

Council fails to empty green bins in parts of Chapelfields area. Calling back tomorrow

The York Council has issued the following statement;

“It has clearly been a great week for gardening as we have struggled to keep up with all the garden waste that you put out for us. Unfortunately, we were unable to collect the garden waste from 50 – 60 and 49 – 59 Bramham Road and Marsden Avenue.

We were also unable to collect the recycling from around 35 properties on Chapelfields Road but this was because of roadworks. The properties affected are the odd numbered ones between the Bramham Road and Ridgeway junctions.

We could not get access to Walton Place to collect the green waste.

If you are affected by any of these matters, please put your recycling out by 7am tomorrow and we will endeavour to return and collect. We are very sorry for any problems that this may cause”.

Rubbish from homes in Poppleton and Rawcliffe not collected today

The York Council says it will collect garden waste tomorrow morning from 33 streets in Poppleton and Rawcliffe.

They were unable to collect them today due to a power outage which affected the site where waste is processed. Using manual rather than electronic processing has taken longer than usual, so they have not been able to complete the rounds.

The Council asks those affected to leave their bins out by 7:00am, Saturday 26 May

Starting home composting is easier than ever

As part of International Compost Awareness Week, from 6 to 12 May, North Yorkshire County Council and the City of York Council are encouraging residents to start composting with a fantastic offer in partnership with getcomposting.com.

Residents can buy discounted compost bins online from £8 plus £5.99 delivery for a 220- litre home compost bin and when ordering online they can take advantage of a “buy one get one half price” offer.

As well as taking online and phone orders, on Friday, 11 May, the authorities will launch home compost bin sales from selected household waste recycling centres. These are: Wetherby Road, Harrogate; Malton; Northallerton; Seamer Carr; Selby; Skipton; Whitby; and Hazel Court, York.

York and North Yorkshire residents will be able to buy a 330-litre home compost bin for £10. Bins are limited to two per household and residents must take proof of their address. Visit  www.york.gov.uk/hazelcourthwrc for opening hours.

The national Waste Resources Action Programme estimates that use of a home compost bin diverts about 150kg of waste per household from waste bins each year. It is simple to do and much daily household waste can be recycled. It’s also a cheaper alternative to chargeable garden waste collections and has the benefit of producing free top-quality compost for use as a soil improver, mulch or plant feed.

City of York Councillor Andrew Waller, deputy leader and executive member for the environment, said: “Composting is an easy, effective way to reduce the waste going to landfill and at the same time help your garden.

“This scheme is another great incentive in our drive to support our residents to reduce, reuse and recycle even more of York’s waste.”

Waste collections today – several streets in west York missed

The Council have issued the following statement

“We have been unable to complete refuse collections in some streets today due to a vehicle breakdown. Streets affected:

  • Barkston Avenue (part)
  • Walton Place
  • Brmham Avenue (part)
  • Marston Crescent/ Marston Avenue
  • Tithe Close (today due to telecoms work blocking access).

We will return to complete these streets on Wednesday. Please put your bin back out by 7am”

Green bin collections start on Easter Monday

City of York Council is reminding residents that garden waste collections start again from Easter Monday (2 April).

The collections from nearly 67000 homes will run fortnightly until late November.

Last year City of York Council collected just under 13000 tonnes of garden waste from York homes. All this waste is turned into compost, with some for sale at Hazel Court household waste recycling centre.

Councillor Andrew Waller, deputy Leader of City of York Council with responsibility for the environment, said:  
“We run the green bin service when residents do most of their gardening, so Easter Monday is a great time to start this year’s collections.

“For those without a green bin, we offer discounted home compost bins and or they can take garden waste to one of our household waste recycling centres.

“We’d also like to remind all residents that, especially after we make a major change like reintroducing garden waste, the times of collections can change. So please put your bins or boxes out before 7am on your collections day.”

Black bin and recycling collections also continue on the bank holidays.

UPDATED Delays in recycling collections – Residents urged to use “bring” recycling banks

The Council has issued a statement today (Tuesday) saying,

“We have been so busy today collecting all the festive waste that we were unable to collect the recycling from the following streets:

  • Askham Grove
  • Robinson Drive
  • Acomb Green
  • Askham Lane (from Askham Grove to Foxwood Lane)
  • Yearsley Crescent 
  • Ashville Street 
  • Oakville Street 
  • Park Grove (from alley end of Eldon Street)

If you are affected please put your rubbish out by 7am tomorrow and we will return and collect. Apologies for any inconvenience this has caused”.

Residents are being urged to use the network of recycling banks across the City.

The plea comes after street collections fell behind scheduled last week.

The Council reported that very large amounts of, post festive season, waste were being presented for collection.

York Council services over festive period

Plan ahead for a happy holiday! 

City of York Council has “got Christmas all wrapped up and we’ve pulled our festive information into one place to help residents plan ahead”.

The customer centre will close over the festive period.

It will shut at 4pm on Friday 22 December and then re-open on Wednesday 27 December running normal opening hours except for on Friday 29 December when it will close at 4pm.

The customer centre will then re-open in the New Year on 2 January when normal opening hours will start.

We remain open for all social care, housing and homelessness emergencies.  In addition, the team will carry out urgent assessments of adults or children and can provide advice or guidance over the phone.  Emergency contact info can be found at www.york.gov.uk/emergencies
