York Council seeks residents’ views on World War I commemoration
The move follows a motion to Full Council earlier this year which called for a group to be set up to co-ordinate plans for the commemorations across the city, ensuring that as many people as possible are involved in the commemorative events.
”We’re keen to find out whether people are already planning any commemorative events and, if they are, what the council and its partners may be able to do to support them. We also want to hear if there are any particular events on commemorations that people would like to see in the city.”
: “We want to create and support a diverse programme of activities that reflect the horrors of war and the causes and consequences of the war; as well as making a commitment to learn the lessons of the past to help build peace in the future.”
Comments and ideas should be emailed to WW1Commemoration2018@york.gov.uk as soon as possible.

Landscapes of Remembrance is a York Archaeological Trust project funded by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund. The project has explored memorials to the fallen of World War One from an archaeological perspective. We have looked at location, style, symbolism and the background to the creation of these memorials. We have explored records in the archives and gone out into the field to photograph and record details about the monuments.
The Landscape of Remembrance soundscape has been created by Converge students. Inspired by the work of our volunteers they have looked at the records and gone out into the field to consider how we commemorate and how we relate to monuments today.
