York Council seeks residents’ views on World War I commemoration

City of York Council is asking residents for their ideas on ways to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the end of World War I next year.

The move follows a motion to Full Council earlier this year which called for a group to be set up to co-ordinate plans for the commemorations across the city, ensuring that as many people as possible are involved in the commemorative events.

”We’re keen to find out whether people are already planning any commemorative events and, if they are, what the council and its partners may be able to do to support them. We also want to hear if there are any particular events on commemorations that people would like to see in the city.”

: “We want to create and support a diverse programme of activities that reflect the horrors of war and the causes and consequences of the war; as well as making a commitment to learn the lessons of the past to help build peace in the future.”

Comments and ideas should be emailed to WW1Commemoration2018@york.gov.uk as soon as possible.
