To celebrate National Poetry Day, Say Owt are teaming up with The Big City Read and inviting you to a special open mic. This very special event will be set outside under the skies of York in the Shambles Food Court. Here you’ll hear poetry on the theme of ’vampires’. Poets are welcome to share their verse. The Rowntree family had a passion for making learning more widely accessible to all, through public libraries, adult literacy and leisure-time reading. They were instrumental in the creation of the city library (York Explore) and branch libraries, as can be seen on the foundation plaque found just inside the main entrance.
In her illustrated talk Bridget Morris will explore some of the fascinating aspects of the legacy left by the Rowntrees, both in their world-famous factory and more widely across the city of York.

Julie Nicholson’s lecture will draw on personal narrative and experience in exploring the choices people make about how to live and thrive in the shadow of death and trauma, including the complex area of forgiveness.
Julie is a writer and an ordained priest in the Anglican Church. Following the sudden death of her eldest daughter in the London bombings on the 7th July 2005, Julie resigned her post as a parish priest to attend to the demands of bereavement and family support in what was a high-profile terrorist attack.
