Police are urging people to behave responsibly and stay safe this Bonfire Night period.

While a great many people enjoy the festivities at this time of year, there are others for whom it brings distress and raises the fear of crime.

Police officers, PCSOs and Special Constables will be undertaking proactive patrols to ensure that residents and visitors feel safe.

Posters have been delivered to shops to prevent young people buying eggs and flour and fireworks, and schools have been visited to educate young people about anti-social behaviour and the dangers of fireworks. Social media is also being used to provide information and advice to residents.

Assistant Chief Constable Paul Kennedy, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “Officers will be out in the towns and cities across North Yorkshire to act as reassurance and deter anti-social behaviour.

“I would like parents to speak to their children to ensure that they understand how their actions can put themselves at risk, and leave others in fear of crime. If you know that a neighbour is vulnerable, please keep an eye out for them to help prevent them from becoming concerned about being a victim of crime.”

“We work closely with the Fire and Rescue Service and I would also remind people not take risks with fireworks. Anyone caught supplying fireworks to under 18-year-olds or lighting them in the street can expect to be dealt with robustly, and people working in shops should also be mindful of selling anything to young people which could be used to cause anti-social behaviour.”

York Police invite football fans to show burglars the red card

York Police are urging football fans to get their valuable items security marked to help tackle property theft.

Officers are working with York City Football Club, using their new ‘dot peen’ property marking equipment at the stadium.

Dot peen marking involves using a tungsten carbide-tipped pin to indent an object with dots to create a visible, permanent unique number. The unique number will be entered onto the national Immobilise property register database, vastly increasing the chances that it will be reunited with its owner if it is lost or stolen.

The machines can mark at a speed of two characters per second, to an accuracy of 0.006mm, and can be used on everything from steel and aluminium to plastic. They have been funded by North Yorkshire Police, the Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire, and Safer York Partnership.

PCSO Andy Smith, of York North Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Dot peen machines can engrave your cycles, phones and music players – essentially, everything except your football! In the unfortunate event of items being stolen or lost, dot peen marking gives us a much better chance to return your property to you.

“The process is very easy and will only take a few of minutes of your time, so you shouldn’t miss any of the game.

“We will also be available to offer security advice or answer any questions you might have. We hope you will come and see us and enjoy the game!”

The Safer Neighbourhood Team will be in the car park under the main stand from 12pm to 3pm for the following games:

Saturday 14 November 2015 v Plymouth
Saturday 19 December 2015 v Morecambe

Say no to police cuts in York – Petition launched

The Conservative Government is planning to cut the Home Office budget in November’s Comprehensive Spending Review and change the ‘Police Funding Formula’.

The North Yorkshire Police Federation has warned that these comibined cuts could see a reduction in police numbers and leave North Yorkshire Police (who cover York) with fewer police officers than when the force was founded in 1974. The Federation has called for North Yorkshire to be given a “fair deal” by the Government.

Police appeal after man suffers facial injuries in Holgate assault

York police are appealing for information after a man was assaulted outside the One Stop Shop on Acomb Road in York.

The attack happened on Sunday 25 October 2015 at around 4.25pm when a vulnerable 60-year-old man was verbally abused before being assaulted by another man or youth outside the shop.

The victim attended York District Hospital for treatment to serious facial injuries.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the attack, in particular two men who approached the scene of the incident shortly after the assault.

Property marking warning for building site burglars from York Police

York Police are fighting back against building site burglars – by making valuable tools and plant kit ‘too hot to handle’.

Officers are attending a building site in Clifford Street, York, today (Tuesday 27 October) to security mark and log all equipment there, ensuring would-be thieves would find it impossible to sell on.

The site was recently targeted by burglars, and police are now inviting other building firms in York to get their equipment marked too.

Property on the site will be security marked using dot peen marking, in conjunction with the Hermes recording system to log it on Immobilise, the UK national property register database.

Unfortunately the Clifford Street site was targeted overnight on Tuesday 6 and Wednesday 7 October. Despite being left locked and secure, offenders broke into the building site and removed copper pipe and a large amount of equipment, worth around £6,000. The investigation into the burglary is ongoing, and anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 12150177505. Property marking sessions at other sites are also taking place, and officers are now inviting firms in York to get in touch so their equipment can also be security marked and registered.

York woman forfeits £2990 as Police announce local award winners.

North Yorkshire Police have successfully obtained a forfeiture order under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 (POCA) against a woman from York, for cash amounting to £2990 that was seized during a drugs warrant.

Yazmin Biggs, 61, has also been told she must pay £895 in costs to North Yorkshire Police’s Legal Services Department.

Police seized the cash during a search of the home address of Ms Biggs, following reports of drug related activity at the property.

When she appeared in court, Ms Biggs claimed that nothing illegal had taken place in relation to the cash. However when hearing the circumstances in which the cash was seized and details of the subsequent financial investigation, the Magistrates decided that it was more likely than not that the cash was derived from criminal activity.

T/Detective Inspector Rowland of the Force Economic Crime Unit said:

“This particular case once again demonstrates that even when the result of a criminal investigation no further action (NFA), if the cash is seized in suspicious circumstances the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) allows North Yorkshire Police to continue to investigate the origin and intended use of that cash.

“Officers from the force’s Economic Crime Unit will work hard to put evidence before a court and they will decide if the cash was derived from criminal activity or was intended for use in such activity.

“The outcome with Ms Biggs reinforces the message to those wishing to engage in criminal activity, that the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) will be used at every opportunity.”

Winners announced at the first North Yorkshire Police Annual Awards ceremony

Supporting the families of murder victims, saving a woman from suicide and encouraging hundreds of youngsters towards a positive lifestyle – those were just a few of the stories from North Yorkshire Police’s first Annual Awards ceremony, which was held at the Hospitium in York on Friday (23 October).

The Annual Awards event, which was attended by winners, their families and senior officers, was designed to recognise the achievements of officers and staff who embody the Force’s values of courage, compassion and inspiration. It is the first such event to be held by North Yorkshire Police.

Man charged with a public order offence after incident is posted on Facebook

A 28 year old man from York has been charged with a public order offence after verbally abusing a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO).

The incident was reported by members of the public after a video showing the offence was posted on Facebook.

Sergeant Kevin Kelly of the York response unit said:

“My thanks go out to all of our social media followers who reported this incident.

“My colleague, based in York, was simply carrying out her duty, preventing crime and keeping the public safe, when she was verbally abused by a member of the public who thought it was “just a bit of fun” to video the incident and post it on social media.

“This type of despicable behaviour will not be tolerated and as this case clearly shows, there will be serious consequences when we catch those who commit this type of offence.

“Thank you to those people who support the police. As police officers, we want to help our communities be safe from harm, so please continue to support us and report any incidents to us on 101”.

Witness appeal after serious collision on Skeldergate Bridge, York

Police are appealing for witnesses after a serious collision on Skeldergate Bridge in York.

The collision occurred at about 12.25am in the early hours of Sunday 11 October, when a black Toyota Auris, believed to be heading from Tower Street towards Skeldergate Bridge, collided with a female pedestrian on the bridge.

The pedestrian received serious injuries, and remains in a stable condition in hospital. The driver of the car was uninjured.

York Police launch “hate” crime initiative

“Report it so we can sort it” – North Yorkshire Police support National Hate Crime Awareness Week.

National Hate Crime Awareness Week takes place from 10 to 17 October with the aim of the week being to raise awareness about hate crime, what it is and if you are a victim – how to report it.

Throughout the week North Yorkshire Police are supporting a number of local groups and events across the region, to spread the message that hate crime will not be tolerated and to encourage victims to come forward and report it.

Events are taking place in Scarborough, Northallerton, York and Selby with the support of local Safer Neighbourhood Teams. Members of the public are invited to come along to receive information and support.

Hate crime is described as any criminal offence which is perceived by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by a hostility or prejudice based on a person’s disability, race, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity or perceived disability, race, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity.

It can take the form of;

Physical attacks – such as physical assault, damage to property, offensive graffiti, neighbourhood disputes and arson.
Threat of attack – including offensive letters, abusive or obscene telephone call, intimidation or malicious complaints.
Verbal abuse or insults – including offensive letters and posters, abusive gestures, and bullying at school or in the workplace.

Speaking about National Hate Crime Awareness week DCC Tim Madgwick said;

“North Yorkshire Police take hate crime extremely seriously and encourage anyone who has been a victim to come forward and report it. Everyone has a right to live without fear – being who you are is not a crime – but being threatened or harassed because of it is. We would ask victims if they are under immediate threat or attack to call 999. Alternatively you can report it to North Yorkshire Police on 101. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact the Supporting Victims service or Stop Hate UK on 0800 138 1625.”

Figures for hate crime are relatively low in North Yorkshire, but it’s believed this may be due to people either not being aware that they have been subject to a crime or reluctance to report it.

Police and Crime Commissioner, Julia Mulligan said;

“We know that hate crime is under-reported but the reasons for this are not clear. In my Police and Crime Plan, I have set out a clear objective for improvements to be made in response to feedback from the public. I know the police take this very seriously and that once the North Yorkshire specific report I have commissioned is finalised, further improvements to the service will be made. In the meantime, it is important for people to report incidents to the police, or if they feel they’d rather talk to someone independent, they can call Supporting Victims on 01904 669276. The team are trained to ensure victims get the help they need.”

Advice and support will be available at all the events throughout the week and members of the public are invited to drop in and learn more about hate crime, how to recognise it and how they can take steps to stop it.

Local PCSOs will be at York Designer Outlet on Sunday 11 October between 8am- 3.30pm with a hate crime awareness stand to give advice and information. On Monday 12 October the team will be at the University of York Student Union from 6pm-7.30pm. Throughout the week they will be running hate crime awareness sessions at local schools and on Wednesday 14 October a drop in session at Tang Hall Lane Community Centre from 12-2pm

Vital witnesses sought after woman moped rider suffers serious injuries

Police in York have issued an appeal to find vital witnesses after a woman moped rider suffered serious injuries when she was involved in a collision with a blue Toyota MR2 and a white Toyota camper van.

It happened at around 9.15pm on Thursday 1 October 2015 near the Monkbar Hotel on St Maurice’s Road in York.

Appeal for witnesses to serious collision on Jewbury, near Monkbar in York

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed a serious collision involving multiple vehicles on St Maurice’s Road, Jewbury near the Monkbar Hotel in York to contact them.

The collision occurred at around 9.15pm on Thursday 1 October and involved a blue Toyota MR2, a white Toyota Hiace campervan and a blue Taishan moped.

Police and Ambulance were both in attendance.

The rider of the moped, a 49 year-old woman from York sustained serious injuries and was taken to Leeds General Infirmary, where she remains in a serious condition. No further injuries were reported.

The driver of the MR2, a 27-year-old man from York was arrested at the scene. He has been released on bail, pending further enquiries.
