CCTV appeal after Acomb hair salon purse theft
Police have released CCTV images of a man they would like to speak to after a purse was stolen from a York hair salon.
At about 
1
0.50am on 6 April 2016, a man entered the salon in York Road, Acomb. He behaved suspiciously, and approached a hair stylist while holding a large piece of newspaper. He pointed to this, and to a poster on the wall, then left the building.
About ten minutes later, the stylist checked her handbag and discovered her purse was missing. It is believed the suspect used the newspaper to distract the victim and act as a shield when he stole her purse.
The victim went to the bank to cancel her cards, and there had been no unauthorised transactions. At about 2.30pm the same day, a member of the public found the victim’s purse on the road nearby. The purse was handed in to police and returned to the victim. A sum of cash was missing from it.
Despite extensive enquiries since the incident, officers have been unable to identify the suspect.
Police are appealing for anyone who recognises the man in the CCTV images to get in touch, as he may have important information that could assist the investigation.

Temporary accomodation plan for Acomb elderly persons home site
Acomb residents invited to Oakhaven redevelopment event

Residents and businesses in the Acomb Road area of the city are being invited to find out more about the short and long term plans for the redevelopment of the former Oakhaven Older People’s Home next week (Tuesday 28 June).
The Councils plans for the Lowfields school site are expected to be published tomorrow
The council’s longer term plans for the site will see the creation of a new Extra Care facility for older people in the Acomb area: part of the authority’s Older People’s Accommodation Project which aims to secure high quality accommodation to meet the needs of York’s ageing population.
If approved, the flexible accommodation will enable residents, including those with complex care needs such as dementia, to live independently in their own homes on the site, with on-site personal care available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, should they need it.
The authority will shortly begin the process to find a partner to develop the facility at Oakhaven and in 2017 will seek planning consent for the new building.
In the immediate short term, the council is proposing to use the building as accommodation for up to 15 local families and individuals who need temporary accommodation. The facility will be managed by on-site staff seven days a week and the proposals will be subject to planning consent.
Local residents are being invited to attend the drop-in event next Tuesday (21 June) at Oakhaven between 4-7pm to find out more about the short and long term plans for the site.

More speculation about future of health services in Acomb
The announcement that the Lowfields school site being considered as a possible location for a new mental health hospital has prompted questions about other health facilities in Acomb
Acomb Garth NHS choices web site review
Acomb Garth (Gables) on Oak Rise already provides mental health services for Acomb. There is no recent report by the CQC commission on Acomb Garth. Acomb Garth was reported to be changing its role with a view to providing dementia care services from March. But little information has subsequently been made public.
The Trust web site still lists it as providing a HQ for community mental health services
No change has been made to registration documentation, with the “NHS choices web site” not even quoting correctly the responsible NHS Trust (now Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust). There is even confusion about the name (Acomb Gables/Garth).

The Trust describe the work at the Garth/Gables as follows:
Acomb Gables Recovery Unit is a 16 bed adult inpatient unit, for men and women from York, Selby and the surrounding areas.
This inpatient service works closely with clients, community mental health team, family and friends.
The site offers:
- one to one work around psycho-social interventions
- an evolving therapy group programme and activity programme
- support with activities of daily living and meaningful activity and employment
- a wide range of opportunities is made available to access employment; housing; and occupation including voluntary work.
Adjacent to the Garth/Gables is the Acomb Medical Centre.
The Beech Grove GP practice, which is located there, has recently announced a merger with a practice based on Front Street. “It is proposed that the Beech Grove premises, currently in Acomb Health Centre would close and the newly merged practice would be situated at 14 Front Street, Acomb. This is the current premises of Front Street Surgery”. The change is expected to take place in October.
So it appears there will be vacant space on the Oak Rise/Beech Grove site.
Whether this would be a suitable location for a new hospital is another matter.
Transport links in central Acomb are better than Lowfields but neither approaches the range and flexibility of options available in the city centre.

The Council is to consider devolving economic development activity management to the Acomb Alive organisation.

The decision is due to be made at a meeting taking place on 12th April
The plan is likely to be welcomed by many living and working in Westfield and Acomb who feel that the area has been snubbed in recent years both by the Council and local economic development partners like “Make it York”.
The Front Street neighbourhood badly needs a regeneration intiative and local businesses and residents do have a key role to play in any improvement activity.
Residents are working to improve the appearance of the area
Occupancy levels of shops have improved with the economic recovery but too many new businesses seem to flounder within their first couple of years of operation.
Ideas like the establishment of an occasional street market have come to nothing while local Councillors have had to resort to collecting petitions aimed at getting local footpaths repaired.
The scale of any investment which may be on offer is not known and any regeneration project will need at least one full time management post over at least 3 years.
Something major does need to happen and quickly.
Police appeal for information after cyclist injured in Acomb collision
Police are appealing for information and witnesses after a man was injured in a collision involving a car and a cycle.
Between 9.50pm and 10.10pm on Thursday 17 March 2016, a 25-year-old man was cycling along Manor Drive North in Acomb, York, when he heard a car approaching from behind.
The car then took a left turn onto Malvern Avenue, knocking the cyclist off his bike, causing injuries to his face, hands, knees and groin, which required stitches.
The car involved is described as possibly a Ford Fiesta or Focus in either a green or blue colour. Its driver is described as a woman, possibly 30-40 years old, wearing glasses, with mousey brown or dark blonde hair that was shoulder-length with a box fringe.

Police appeal after Acomb church charity box burglary
Police are appealing for information after St Stephens church was burgled and charity cash stolen.
Offenders broke in to St Stephens Church, York Road, Acomb, sometime between 4.30pm on Saturday 28 November and 7.30am on Sunday 29 November.
Power tools were used to attack three safes. However, the offenders were not able to break in to them, and nothing was taken apart from a small amount of loose change from charity collections.
In any event, the safes contained only paperwork, and nothing of value.
