Two of the council’s sheltered accommodation schemes, Glen Lodge and Barstow House, are throwing their doors wide open to the community when they hold fun and themed Open Days in February.
The events are open to everyone and will enable visitors to become more familiar with what’s on offer at both venues as well as help develop further links between residents living in and out the schemes.
On Wednesday 11 February from 2pm to 3.30pm, Glen Lodge in Heworth will hold a Valentines-themed Open Day whilst a Winter Olympics Open Day takes place at Barstow House, St Benedict’s Road, on Wednesday 25 February from 2pm to 4pm.
On Thursday 12th February 2015 a new cafe opens in Acomb at Foxwood Community Centre… but this will be no ordinary café.
Each month a local business will be showcased aimed at highlighting the many and various local small businesses in the area.
February’s event will feature Rose’s Button Box, owned by a local craftswoman, Julie Nacey, who will be bringing along her beautiful home sewn gifts for all the family including her new Easter range.
Acomb Explore will also be popping along bringing books for sale, and free books for babies under 5.
The café, open between 09.30am and 11.30am, will be serving a variety of fresh baked refreshments including scones and cakes.
Sue Galloway from Foxwood Residents Association commented:
“There are a surprising number of local crafts people who are designing and making innovative items and we wanted to highlight their skills. Some of these businesses are extremely successful and this is one way of bringing their skills to a wider audience. It is also a good way of exchanging skills as well as having a friendly chat over a cup of tea. Each month we will be featuring a different local business and we are keen to hear from local entrepreneurs who can contact me on York 01904 794111”..
The craft cafe will open on the 2nd Thursday of each month 9.30-11.30 am at Foxwood community centre, Bellhouse Way, York, YO24 3HY.

10cc are one of the very few acts to have achieved commercial, critical and creative success in equal measure, with their current live incarnation still able to sell-out major concert halls.
