gas works

Northern Gas Networks is about to start work to upgrade ageing metal gas mains in York city centre.
The project is part of Northern Gas Network’s on-going development of infrastructure across the north of England and will involve replacing existing metallic gas mains with more durable plastic pipes to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.
The eight week project will start on 5 January and take place on Nunnery Lane, Bishopthorpe Road and Scarcroft Road. On Nunnery Lane, it will be necessary to close one lane of the carriageway to allow the essential work to be completed.
A signed diversion route will be in place.
Temporary traffic lights will be in place on Bishopthorpe Road and Scarcroft Road.
Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times throughout the duration of the essential work and businesses will remain open as usual.

£11.9 million road resurfacing boost for York

Potholes

The government has stepped in to give York an additional £2 million a year to tackle the road maintenance backlog.

Details of the announcement can be found by clicking here

The York Council gained notoriety in 2012 by halving the amount that it invested in repairing local footpaths and roads.

They continued the policy into 2013 with a large backlog of repairs developing. Investment only returned to 2011 levels this year.

The York Council announced its provisional resurfacing programme for 2015 a couple of weeks ago. The government announcement means that this list should now more than double in size.

Meanwhile the Tudor Road footpaths, leading to the rear entrance to the Lowfields school site, have been resurfaced (left).

Mystery still surrounds the continuing delays on work starting on the Lowfields  Retirement Village which was supposed to have been fully operational earlier in the year.

The Cabinet member with responsibility for the project is to be questioned again at the Council meeting on 11th December. Previously she has said that confidential negotiations with potential providers were “ongoing”.

After 18 months these must by now have been concluded one way or another?

The project is currently running 3 years behind schedule

Not a lot of work is scheduled for the west of the city although the bulk of the programme will not be revealed until the Council has completed its budget for next year in February. The current £2 million programme would normally be supplemented by another £4 million worth of schemes when the dust has settled.

Nevertheless there are some worrying omissions.

In the Westfield ward only a tiny footpath resurfacing scheme in Kempton Close is included.

Most residents expect major highways repairs to be necessary on the Kingsway West/Windsor Garth loop following damaged caused by vehicles accessing the new Our Lady’s redevelopment site. There is no sign of such a commitment

Residents living in the terraced area around Gladstone Street will also be disappointed to have been missed from the initial list. The streets are long overdue for resurfacing. They really need to be sorted out as part of a regeneration scheme for the whole of that part of Acomb.

To carry out the works safely, a road closure will be in place on Vesper Drive.

Due to the nature of the works and the size of the machinery required to undertake the works, there will be periods of time when it will not be possible for residents to gain vehicular access to their properties during the works. In these circumstances, residents should be prepared to use alternative parking.

Pedestrian access will be available at all times. Cyclists will have to dismount and use the footways when travelling through the affected areas.
