Martyn Waites was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne. He trained at the Birmingham School of Speech and Drama and worked as an actor for many years before becoming a writer. His novels include the critically acclaimed Joe Donovan series, set in the north-east of England, and The White Room which was a Guardian book of the year. In 2013 he was chosen to write Angel of Death, the official sequel to Susan Hill’s Woman in Black and in 2014 won the Grand Prix du Roman Noir for Born Under Punches. Martyn wrote the bestselling ‘Brennan and Esposito’ series under the pseudonym Tania Carver. To date, the series has sold over 190,000 copies. York-based author Nick Morrice speaks about and reads from his autobiographical novel which is based on four key periods in his life. The book is dedicated to the contemporary composer Bob Chilcott whose musical setting of the medieval lyric poem, ”The Lily and the Rose”, led the author to discover surprising parallels between his own life and the medieval legends of ‘The Quest for the Holy Grail’ and ‘Sir Gawain and the Green Knight’.

This is an illustrated talk with an opportunity for questions afterwards. Signed copies will be available at £10.00.

What’s on in York: Explore a Story

‘Explore a Story’ is an interactive storytelling session for 2-5 year olds. The session uses props and games to get the children involved in bringing the stories to life. The sessions give children the opportunity to use and develop their imaginations within the storytelling, and helps to develop their creative skills beyond the sessions also.

This interactive style of storytelling shows the children different ways to read a story and opens up and re-imagines how the stories are put together.

Come with us through the swishy swashy grass on a bear hunt, with teddy to the moon, or on a perilous quest to find some secret treasure. They are encouraged to bring their own ideas and build them into the session on a journey through the imagination.

Tickets £2 per child. For children aged 2 – 5 years old.

York resident Carmen Radtke and novelist will talk about her historical mysteries, her approach to researching the past and her inspirations. She also welcomes questions.

Her debut novel, The Case of the Missing Bride, was a Malice Domestic competition finalist and is published by Bloodhound Books. A Matter of Love and Death was published under the pen name Caron Albright by Bombshell Books.

Join Sarah Brown, Director and Chief Executive of the York Glaziers Trust as she talks about the conservation of York Minster’s Great East Window

The conservation of York Minster’s Great East Window of 1405-8 between 2011 and 2017 has been not only one of Europe’s most ambitious conservation projects, but also an opportunity to explore one of Europe’s greatest medieval masterpieces. The Great East Window has been described as ‘England’ Sistine chapel of stained glass’, and this presentation will examine these claims, while revealing the work of the conservators who have safeguarded its future.

Sarah Brown is a national expert on medieval ecclesiastical architecture, stained glass history and conservation, and is the author of many books and articles in the field. She is president of the British Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi and is the General Secretary of the International Scientific Committee for the Conservation of Stained Glass. Sarah works as a Senior Lecturer specialising in stained glass, its history and conservation within the History of Art Department at the University of York, and has since 2008 also been Director and Chief Executive of the York Glaziers Trust, responsible for the care of the stained glass of York Minster.

Join author, poet and creative writing teacher Maria Stephenson for a poetry workshop where you can explore the benefits of cathartic writing.

Our poetry is often written for ourselves and will never see the light of day but sometimes, we realise that as well as helping ourselves, our words can move and inspire others. This is the essence of Maria’s collection ‘Poetry for the Newly Single 40 Something’ (Stairwell Books) which chronicles the escape from an abusive marriage towards living again, also shining a light onto on-line dating experiences. She will read from her collection and talk about the path to publication during the creative writing workshop included in the event.

Author’s Biography:

I am a creative writing teacher and a mother of two based in the lovely market town of Otley near Leeds. Over the last few years, life has taken the wonderful turn of my being able to make a living as a writer and teacher of writing. From a young age, my dream has been to write poems and stories that will help and move my readers and I’m delighted that this dream is becoming more and more of a reality.

My debut solo poetry collection has now come out and as well as working to promote it, I am also working on the final edit of my crime novel, ‘The Man Behind Closed Doors’ which was recently shortlisted for the international Luke Bitmead prize, in association with Legend Press, I’m really looking forward to unleashing this on the world too.

If anyone was to ask me how it is possible to achieve success as a writer I would say, keep going, keep writing, keep believing in your voice. Polish your work until it shines and never give up. We can all achieve our dreams.

I am a graduate from the University Of Central Lancashire, UK, with a Bachelors degree in Forensic Science and Criminology who has always enjoyed the more gory side of life. I started writing as soon as I was able to string a sentence together, starting with changing fairy tales, to fan fiction and after writing academic papers at university I started with my own novels. My first major release was Shattered Souls on March 1st 2014 and I now have six books on sale, one of which was released last month, follow me everywhere and get to know me a little more

The majority of people in the UK still identify as working class, yet no political party today can confidently articulate their interests. So who is now working class and how do political parties gain their support?

Based on the opinions and voices of lower and middle-income voters, this insightful book, by JRF’s Executive Director and York resident Claire Ainsley, proposes what needs to be done to address the issues of the ‘new working class’. It provides practical recommendations for political parties to reconnect with the electorate and regain trust.

The evening will consist of a short introduction to the book and a discussion on how can political parties connect with voters of the new working class and gain their support.

A complimentary drinks receptions will begin at 6pm in the Marriott Room, and the main event will start at 6.30pm
