The deluge that engulfed the City yesterday evening produced surface water flooding problems in many areas.
The Council says it is working hard to remedy problems. It asks residents to report issues to FRM@york.gov.uk or call the customer centre on 01904 551550.

City of York Council will benefit from a share of a further £100m fund to repair potholes and storm damage, Transport Secretary Chris Grayling announced today (Monday, March 26).
The City of York will get over £256,000 to repair the roads following this winter’s adverse weather when road temperatures across York dropped as low as -5.9 degrees and froze on many more occasions than a normal year. Across the North East, local authorities will benefit from over £4.5m in total.
In addition to a pothole repair fund, we will receive £72,000 to build on our pothole spotter trial aimed at improving road safety by revolutionising the way potholes are identified and managed. The trial will explore the use of high definition remote monitoring to allow for accurate and more frequent surveying of the local road network.

The pothole-spotter system is mounted to refuse collection vehicles comprised of high-definition cameras, an integrated navigation system and intelligent software. According to the “Save Lowfields Playing Field Action Groups“ Facebook page the Ainsty Internal Drainage Board is unhappy with the Council’s plans to develop the playing field.
The Drainage Board comments come a few days after Sport England recorded a formal (holding) objection to the plans. Sport England say that the Council proposed alternative football pitch location (Sim Balk Lane) is unconvincing with any facility there likely to be used mainly by Bishopthorpe.

Concerns about water run off rates, from what is currently a self draining grassed field, are not unexpected.
A glace at the Council unimaginative serried rows of new houses (see left) as well as offering little streetscape relief, have minimal green space provision.
Sport England objection
Hard surfaces increase water run off rates and neighbouring properties could be adversley affected.
Hopefully the Council will now withdraw its proposals and come with something that not only increases the availability of homes in the area but also addresses some endemic failings.
Not least amongst these are the lack of open space and sports pitches in the Westfield ward.
The Police have issued the following statement,
“We have recently had a number of thefts where tools (drills) and garden equipment (chainsaws, hedge cutters) have been taken.
The most recent theft was on Tudor Road in Acomb overnight on the 24th August.

City of York Council will be installing a new traffic island at the junction of Tudor Road and Kingsway West on Thursday 24 November.

The controversial plan was opposed by the majority of residents when it was first suggested in 2010 by transport officials. The then LibDem led Council implemented alternative safety improvements, but the “keep left” traffic island plan has now been revived.
Unfortunately other aspects of a “safe routes to school” programme – which involved the construction of a pedestrian crossing at the junction – have not been pursued by the Council.
The work on thr new bollard is expected to take one day to complete, weather permitting. Work will take place between 9.30am – 3.30pm.
In order to carry out the work safely, the junction will be closed to all traffic, except emergency vehicles. A clearly signed diversion route will be in place. If residents require vehicle access to properties located within the works area, they may be permitted to access to their property through the works as long as it is safe to do so. Residents are asked to inform on-site traffic management operatives to ensure site safety.
As with any construction work, there is likely to be a certain amount of disruption. Residents are assured that everything reasonably possible will be done to keep this to a minimum. However motorists should expect some delays and plan their journey accordingly.
The contractor carrying out the work is Rediweld, and they will be responsible for safety on site.

The City of York Council will start work week commencing 24th November 2014 to reconstruct the footway shown on the plan above.
The short section of footpath affected is that leading to the old entrance to Lowfields school and numbers 32 – 42
This scheme is programmed to take 1 week, weather permitting.
The works consists of fully excavating the footway and reconstructing from the ground up in tarmac new road kerbs are to be installed.
The Contractor carrying out the work will be City of York Council’s Highways department who are responsible for your safety and for providing access while the work is ongoing. (Please be patient with the contractor when facilitating your access). The contractor will be working between 8:00am and 4:00pm Monday to Thursday, and 8:00am to 12:30pm on Fridays.
It was reported to the police shortly after 12.50am on Tuesday 14 October 2014, by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, who were dealing with a car fire on Tudor Road, Acomb.
The suspect was seen placing something underneath a BMW before setting it on fire.
After the incident, the person responsible headed towards Hamilton Drive.
As a result of the fire, the BMW 3 series was completely destroyed and a Citroen Berlingo and a Mazda were damaged. The front of the house was also damaged by the fire.
Detective Sergeant Mark Jackson, of York CID, said: “The act of arson took place very close to the house where people were sleeping. This fire could easily have led to potentially devastating consequences.
“If you recognise the person captured on camera, or saw someone matching their description in the Tudor Road, Gale Lane or Middleton Road areas around the time of the fire, I urge you to contact the police immediately.
“I am also keen to speak to anyone who works at local garages who may have sold fuel to someone filling a petrol can, and ask them to get in touch straight away.”

Some 500 homes in the Kingsway West area haven’t had their bins emptied today (Wednesday). Once again the Council claims that they will be emptied tomorrow.
The list, being published on the Council’s web site, now includes lists of streets where recycling also hasn’t been collected.
The backlog now runs into thousands of homes.
