What’s on in York: The real story behind Viking Voices

Vincent Atherton describes the history behind his novel Viking Voices, which looks at the relationship between a warrior and his wife and his king in the Viking era.

Vincent Atherton Ruth 2It is the 10th century. Amleth is a warrior serving the Hiberno-Norse king Ragnald. He and his wife Aud are violently thrown out of Dublin, along with the rest of their group The Irish tribes they are enslaving revolt against them.
The king swears to return and regain their city, after wandering the Irish Sea and encountering enemies in Anglesey, the Isle of Man and Scotland.
Amidst their adventures they fight battles and gather treasure, forming alliances and even making friends along the way.
Amleth becomes indispensible to the aggressive and brutal Ragnald, his cunning and his blacksmith skills enabling him to produce his own glittering sword.

Eventually they all get rich and live happily ever after, except for those that die…..

Viking Voices is a historic novel that explains how the Cuerdale Hoard, the largest treasure ever found in Western Europe, came to be buried in the bank of the Ribble.

Vincent Atherton also looks at the relationship between a warrior and his wife against the turbulent background of friction between England and Ireland in the 10th century. With fictional characters who experience true historical events, this is an insightful and enjoyable read for any fans of historical fiction, particularly the Viking era.

Table Tennis Paul 2Special Olympics City of York in conjunction with the City of York Council Sport and Active Leisure team are starting up a new after school Table Tennis club.

The club will be fully inclusive and will run at Joseph Rowntree School, Haxby Rd, York, YO32 4BZ, ever Tuesday evening from 4.30-6pm, starting on the 2nd February.

It will cost £4 per session.

New Year starts here with Walk 2 Jog!

Following over 100 people participating in Walk 2 Jog in 2015, Sport and Active Leisure are now increasing the program with 3 new locations across the city.
These are Fulford Community Centre, Vanguard Shopping Complex (near M&S supermarket entrance) and Acomb.

Courses will also continuing to start from Rowntree Park due to its huge popularity.

Week 1 will consist of a moderately paced walk along one of the programs 3.5km (2miles) routes. By Week 10 you will be able to jog  5km (3.2miles) without the need for rest.

The great thing about this course is that no matter where you are starting from you will not get left behind.

For the more advanced in the group our highly qualified run leaders have a range of methods to keep you challenged.

Our first three courses start on the following dates, Monday 29 February (Fulford), Wednesday 9 March (Vanguard) and Tuesday 15 March (Rowntree Park).

Courses Cost £10 and you will receive a free t-shirt.

Active York Awards Picture Winners 2015 (2) Paul 32016 will be the 3rd annual Awards and will be hosted by BBC Sport Presenter Tanya Arnold.

The Awards have grown year on year and this years Awards are expected to be a fantastic and memorable occasion.

The leading nominees in each category will be invited to attend the Active York Sports Awards ceremony.

To be eligible for nomination for any Active York Sport Award you must live, school or train within City of York Council’s boundaries the qualifying period runs from April 2015 to March 2016

Awards will be judged by members of the Active York Board, which includes sporting partners from across the city and Stuart Martel, Deputy Editor of The Press.

The York Sports Awards dinner will be used to celebrate and raise the profile of the Fund for the Gifted programme and include opportunities for corporate diners to donate, and a raffle/auction run to bring new funds to the programme.

You have just a few weeks to enter your nominations before the closing date of 15 February 2016.

The 2016 Awards will recognise outstanding athletes, coaches and volunteers in 13 categories, with the leading nominees in each being invited to attend the glitzy Awards Dinner on 17 March at University of York.

Award categories include:
