Laura Purcell: Writing Victorian Gothic Event sponsored by The Shepherd Group

Oct _16Linda

York Explore Library :

Tue 16 Oct :

6.30pm – 7.45pm :

£5

Join Laura Purcell as she talks about her spine chilling Victorian Gothic novels The Silent Companions and The Corset.

Laura Purcell has enjoyed huge success with The Silent Companions which featured on both the Radio 2 Book Club and the Zoe Ball Book Club on ITV.

The Corset is her new novel.
Dorothea and Ruth.
Prison visitor and prisoner. Powerful and powerless.
Dorothea Truelove is young, wealthy and beautiful. Ruth Butterham is young, poor and awaiting trial for murder.
When Dorothea’s charitable work leads her to Oakgate Prison, she is delighted with the chance to explore her fascination with phrenology and test her hypothesis that the shape of a person’s skull can cast a light on their darkest crimes. But when she meets teenage seamstress Ruth, she is faced with another theory: that it is possible to kill with a needle and thread. For Ruth attributes her crimes to a supernatural power inherent in her stitches.
The story Ruth has to tell of her deadly creations – of bitterness and betrayal, of death and dresses – will shake Dorothea’s belief in rationality, and the power of redemption.

This is not a bereavement group, but a chance to speak freely about any aspects of death or dying whether good or not quite so good.

We hope, between us, to answer questions and help the discussion around what we would like at the end – before the end. Thinking about the inevitable in advance ensures good preparation for us and our families, and better choices to suit our individual needs.

Sally Vickers and The Librarian

York Explore Library :

Oct _11Sally

Thu 11 Oct :

6.30pm – 7.45pm :

£7.50

York Explore is delighted to be welcoming acclaimed novelist Salley Vickers to talk about her latest novel, The Librarian.

Sally’s first novel, Miss Garnet’s Angel was a word of mouth success and is a favourite with readers’ groups. It is wonderful that this event is taking place during National Libraries Week as Salley’s new book celebrates the power of libraries and librarians to change lives.

Sylvia Blackwell, a young woman in her twenties, moves to East Mole, a quaint market town in middle England, to start a new job as a children’s librarian. But the apparently pleasant town is not all it seems. Sylvia falls in love with an older man – but it’s her connection to his precocious young daughter and her neighbours’ son which will change her life and put them, the library and her job under threat.

How does the library alter the young children’s lives and how do the children fare as a result of the books Sylvia introduces them to?

Author’s Biography:

Salley Vickers is the author of many acclaimed novels including the best-selling Miss Garnet’s Angel, Mr Golightly’s Holiday, The Other Side of You and The Cleaner of Chartres (Viking 2012) and two short story collections, the latest The Boy Who Could See Death (Viking 2015). She has worked as a cleaner, a dancer, a teacher of children with special needs, a university lecturer and a psychoanalyst. She now writes and lectures full time.

Another strange decision by York planners as local bowling club doomed

Land near Acomb Library which could be improved.

York planning Councillors decided yesterday to permit the development of the Acomb Bowling Club

The applicants claimed that there were no longer enough people interested in bowling in York to sustain the green.

Ironically the Planning sub committee then went on the insist that the developers pay the York RI bowling club £20,000 to expand their greens. Why such an expansion should be necessary when many bowling clubs already have spare membership places remains a mystery.

The RI site is a mile away from Front Street and lies in the Holgate ward,. The opportunity to invest the £20,000 from the S106 contribution in green space in the Westfield ward has been lost.

Planning Councillors should have insisted that the payment be retained and earmarked for the improvement of the old allotments site (behind the Library car park) which would at least have secured the future of some green space in the Front Street area.

Council officials have also claimed that no discussions about the expansion of the library (onto the Council owned land nearby) have taken place “since it was acquired in 2008”. Ten years ago officials in the council’s estates department were instructed to acquire the bowling green and the allotments site at the same time. They failed to do so and the bowling club limped on for a few more years.

The Bowling Club trustees have yet tor reveal what will happen to the substantial receipt they will receive from the sale of the green.

Westfield residents will now get the worst of all worlds. A sports facility is being lost. Another green space is being built on, an opportunity to provide a small “pocket” park has gone  and the need for an expanded library – incorporating a “one stop shop” – seems further away than ever.

Another bad day for west York
