Foster Care Fortnight launches major recruitment shift

People with experience of health, caring and education or youth work are being recruited to a career in fostering with City of York Council.

Interested individuals, couples or those with families are being invited to meet local need for foster care for older children and young people who are unable to live with their own families.

Also, more experienced carers are being recruited to foster children and young people with additional needs such as learning or physical disabilities, for short breaks or the longer term.

Besides ongoing training and support for carers from the council’s team as well as from local foster carers, a financial package is provided that recognises the foster carer’s commitment and care and the level of need they support.

CityCross comes to York!

In the tyre tracks of the inaugural Tour de Yorkshire City of York Council’s Rowntree Park will play host to the exhilarating Morvelo CityCross on 13 June.

York will host the fourth CityCross which brings together the best elements from cycling and mountain biking with added man made obstacles, including steps, ramps, berms and bridges.

In CityCross everyone is a winner. There will be races for Under 12’s, Youths, Juniors, Women Only, Novices, Seniors and Veterans. CityCross is a bike race and a party all rolled into one and as much fun to watch as to race. Spectating is free, and positively encouraged.

With trade stands, artists exhibiting and artisan food stalls and a purpose built challenging course in the grounds of Rowntrees Park the event has all the hall marks of a big cycling fun packed party for all the family.

David Short, i-Travel York programme manager said, “I am delighted that Morvelo have approached us with a view to staging the event in York which we are pleased to support. All the evidence shows that if you get people into cycling in a fun environment then they are more likely to take it up as their preferred choice of travel. Cycling keeps you fit, is better for the environment, reduces traffic congestion and is cheap!”

York Music Centre pupils enjoy regional success

Children and young people from City of York Council’s York Music Centre are celebrating group and individual successes in an Irish music competition.

The group of young musicians competed in the Northern Regional Fleadh in Manchester on Saturday 9 May and has won a place in the All Britain Fleadh, to be hosted by the Northern Region on 27 and 28 June at Meyerscough College near Preston.

City of York Council is reminding residents and visitors to plan ahead for Saturday 2 May when stage two of the inaugural Tour de Yorkshire will finish in York. A women’s race will take place ahead of the stage two finish, covering four laps of the 20km circuit from 10.30am.

Dame Sarah Storey and Joanna Rowsell will line up alongside nearly 100 of the UK’s best female cyclists to tackle four laps of the 20km circuit. At approximately 2.25pm the Tour de Yorkshire peloton, including Sir Bradley Wiggins and Olympic gold medallist Samuel Sanchez, will enter the circuit from Holtby and take on two and a half laps of the circuit before a dramatic finish on Knavesmire Road.

The circuit will see the riders start at the Knavesmire before heading through Micklegate Bar and crossing Ouse Bridge. They will then continue through the city centre and on to Layerthorpe before heading out via Heworth and Stockton Lane to Murton. They will then pass through Osbaldwick, Tang Hall and Layerthorpe. The peloton will then go over Skeldergate bridge, down Bishopthorpe Road and rejoin Knavesmire Road for the start/finish line.

The New Ebor Street Feast will add a splash of fun and a hint of magic to what already promises to be a fantastic day. Positioned alongside the finish line on the Knavesmire the festival with give spectators, residents and visitors a chance to sample some of the finest food and drink Yorkshire has to offer.

York will also play host to several street parties throughout the day, including the ‘E by Eck’ street party on Bishy Road, and a day of events in both Fossgate and Micklegate.

Residents and tourists are advised that the route will be closed from 8am on Saturday 2 May until approximately 5pm, or as soon as possible after the race has finished. During the time that the roads are closed their will be no access for vehicles to properties either adjacent to or on the race route itself. This will also include streets connected to the route that can not be accessed from elsewhere.

Anyone who is planning to travel on Saturday 2 May will need to ensure that they have parked their vehicle in an area where they can access the remaining open road network. No vehicles will be allowed to drive on the race route after road closures are in place. Residents are also advised to pass this information to anyone intending to visit them during the weekend.

Baroness Harris joins the campaign trail in York

Local Liberal Democrats were joined on the campaign trail on Friday by a high-profile member of the House of Lords.

Baroness Angela Harris of Richmond, a Deputy Speaker of the Lords and former Chair of the North Yorkshire Police Authority, joined campaigners in Dringhouses & Woodthorpe ahead of next months elections. The Life Peer met with local candidates and party members, including young Lib Dems from across the city.

The Lib Dems are standing a full slate of candidates in the local elections alongside parliamentary hopefuls Nick Love in York Central and James Blanchard in York Outer. Earlier this month, the party launched its local elections manifesto promising to ‘put residents first’.

“I am delighted to be helping the campaign here in York. I am particularly happy to be speaking to young members some of whom will be voting for the first time. It is wonderful to see young people engaged in politics and I would urge all first time voters to go out and have their say on May 7th.

“I know there is a really positive mood around the Lib Dem campaign locally and we have tremendous set of candidates across the city. We also have a strong set of local policies which are going down well on the doorstep with residents.”

Region’s first tenancy fraud conference to be held in York

Ways to tackle tenancy fraud will be top of the agenda at the region’s first tenancy fraud conference, hosted by Veritau, City of York Council’s fraud investigation service at West Offices, York on Tuesday 10 March 2015.

There, 32 social landlords will be attending the Tenancy Fraud Conference, organised on behalf of the Yorkshire and Humberside Tenancy Fraud Forum.

Disappointment as Police fail to deal with speeding problems in Acomb and Westfield areas

The Acomb and Westfield wards in York appear to have been snubbed as the police today launched a “community speed watch” project.

The Community Speed Watch pilot programme will run at up to 50 sites across York, Harrogate, Selby and Harrogate “where local people have already registered a concern about speeding vehicles”.

The Police say that the sites are “mainly” residential areas with 30 and 40 mph speed limits.

In York the chosen sites are in Holgate, Strensall, Clifton Moor, Dringhouses and Rawcliffe

However the concerns of residents living on Green Lane and Wetherby Road in the Westfield ward and Beckfield Lane in the Acomb Ward appear to have been overlooked.

A recent survey on Wetherby Road showed nearly 40% of vehicles triggering the 30 mph VAS warning sign.

No consultation with local Councillors appears to have taken place.

In a media release the Police say, “Over the next six months, police volunteers, together with members of the community, will visit the sites with a hand-held radar gun and/or an LED speed sign. They will record vehicle speeds and anyone caught speeding will receive a letter from North Yorkshire Police informing them of their offence and the need to address driving behaviour.

The main purpose of Community Speed Watch is to draw drivers’ attention to speed limits in areas where communities say it is affecting their quality of life, and to educate them about the effects that anti-social road use can have on local people. However, North Yorkshire Police will also be keeping a close watch on the recorded data, and may take enforcement measures if a persistent or extreme offender is identified”.

Our view

We think that using PCSOs and Specials to test speed limit compliance may be a good way to use some of their time.

We don’t see the involvement of local residents in enforcement activity of this sort as being appropriate.

It is potentially confrontational and part of the drift away from sustaining professional public service standards.

Woodthorpe school to help out with spring clean in March

Local residents, community groups and businesses will be involved in spring clean over the last weekend of March to carry out an annual city-wide spring clean of York.

During March, the council will focus on supporting hard-working residents committed to keeping their neighbourhood looking – and staying – tidy.

So far, community groups such as the Friends of Leeman Park have committed to spruce up a play ground, Lindsey Avenue Residents’ Association will be encouraging people to recycle even more and the Dunnington in Bloom team will be concentrating their efforts on tidying a layby on the A1079.

Smarter York officers will be working with local businesses to brush up their immediate area as it’s good for business and for the surrounding community.

Pupils at Woodthorpe Primary School are among the York schools being encouraged to spend an hour of the last afternoon of the spring term having a Spring Clean.

Students are also being approached to join in, as well as staff at City of York Council who are being encouraged to go out and help in their own neighbourhoods as part of the ongoing support the council gives them to volunteer to boost the quality of life in York.

Be Clear on Cancer – York campaign starts

Latest data reveals 62 people in York are diagnosed with cancers of the stomach or oesophagus (gullet) each year.

York is supporting the latest ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ campaign that has launched this week urging people to visit their doctor if they have heartburn most days for three weeks or more, as this can be a sign of oesophageal or stomach cancer.
