First community archive project delves into 150 years of local primary school’s history

Volunteers are leading the first community-based archive project , exploring the history of Lord Deramore’s Primary School, as part of the Heritage Lottery Funded Gateway to History project by City of York Council’s Libraries and Archives.

One of the oldest state primary schools in York which opened its doors in 1856, Lord Deramore’s Primary School has kept its own archive collection including minute books, log books and photographs. The Gateway to History project has recruited three volunteers to take forward an innovative research project which is investigating the complete history of the school, including a special focus on the First World War to coincide with its centenary. In commemoration, the school will be transforming one of the classrooms into how it would have looked during the First World War, complete with desks and costumes.
