New powers to prevent anti-social behaviour in York

North Yorkshire Police have been given officers and PCSOs new powers to tackle anti-social behaviour in the Stonebow, Colliergate and St Saviourgate areas of the city.

There has been no public consultation by the York Council on the proposal which potentially represents a significant extension to police powers.

A dispersal order comes into action today – Friday 28 June – and will run until 27 December 2013.

It is enforceable between the hours of 9pm and 6am and gives the police powers to disperse groups of two or more people whose behaviour is intimidating or causing harassment, alarm or distress to members of the public.

To remain in or return to this area having been told to leave by the police, may be an offence under Section 30(4) of the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003.

Breaching the order is punishable by up to three months’ imprisonment or a fine of up to £5,000, or both.

Food Safety Week 2013 (10-16 June)

bacteria_free_cartoon_web

City of York Council is urging residents to take care and think about food hygiene when cooking at home this Food Safety Week.

A new survey by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) shows that 86 per cent of those asked in Yorkshire admitted to one or more habits that put them at risk of food poisoning, including 33 per cent admitting they would eat food that has been dropped on the floor and 24 per cent not washing their hands properly before preparing food.

To help residents think about food hygiene at home, The FSA have designed a new Kitchen Check. The Kitchen Check gets people to look at their own food preparation practices and will provide them with a score and tips based on their answers.

The survey also reveals that 39 per cent of people in Yorkshire don’t check ‘use by’ dates, with 88 per cent of them using the ‘sniff test’ and 62 per cent just checking the colour – even though this will not always reveal whether the food is safe to eat.
