Olympic gold medallists set to take to York’s streets!

olympics Team GB medal winners from Rio, Joanna Rowsell Shand, Katie Archibald and Phillip Hindes will be joined by Tre Whyte, Shanaze Reade and Kyle Evans.

Sky Ride is a free, fun bike ride along a scenic 7km route taking in some of York’s famous landmarks including the Minster and Clifford’s Tower. The route will also take riders through the Festival of Cycling in Rowntree Park.

During Sky Ride York there will be music and entertainment, competitions and above all, a great traffic-free route to ride around the centre of York that will allow bike riders to see York from a different perspective.

Riders will also be able to take in the Festival of Cycling when the route passes Rowntree Park. The free festival has something for the whole family with all sorts of pedal powered activities for people to take part in. There will be bikes and trikes of all shapes and sizes including adapted bikes, balance bikes and tandems for people to test ride.

There will also be ten adapted bikes available to hire from Rowntree Park (near the Millennium Bridge entrance). Bike hire is free of charge, and available on a first come, first served basis.

The Sky Ride York route will be closed to all traffic from 10.30am until approximately 5pm, or as soon as possible after the event has finished to ensure the safety of everyone taking part.

Residents and visitors are urged to make use of the city’s extensive Park&Ride network on the day, particularly by using the Park&Pedal facilities at any of York’s six Park&Ride sites. sky ride York

Bus routes will be altered to ensure that access into and out of the city centre is maintained, whilst avoiding those roads closed as part of the route. Revised timetables will be put into place to ensure the smooth running of bus services. Residents and visitors are being encouraged to check their travel plans in advance and allow extra time for their journeys on the day. Rowntree Park car park will be closed on Sunday 11 September due to the Festival of Cycling taking place, as in previous years. For safety reasons there will be no access to parking inside the route.

What’s on in York: Sky Ride returns to York for final lap!

Following the hugely popular Sky Ride in 2015 which saw over 8,000 cyclists take to the city’s famous streets, the country’s last ever Sky Ride big city event will take place in York on 11 September.

Cyclists of all ages and abilities will have the chance to take to York’s historic streets on two wheels on a fantastic 7km route taking in some of city’s most famous landmarks, including York Minster and Clifford’s Tower.

During Sky Ride York there will be music and entertainment, competitions plus a traffic-free route to ride around the centre of York that will allow bike riders to see York from a different perspective.

Sky Ride York will launch at 11am at the scenic start location at the Eye of York overlooked by Clifford’s Tower, although riders can join anywhere on the route until 4pm. Road closures will be in place throughout the morning until approximately 5pm, or as soon as possible after the event has finished to ensure the safety of everyone taking part.

The York Festival of Cycling will take place on the same day and will once again give residents and visitors the chance to take part in all sorts of pedal powered activities in Rowntree Park, a stone’s throw away from the Sky Ride Route. A stunt team will also be on hand throughout the day to show off their jaw dropping skills.

What’s on in York: Sky Ride Local from Energise?

British Cycling and Sky, in partnership with City of York Council, have scheduled a series of Sky Ride Local rides in York for 2016. The rides are guided by British Cycling Ride Leaders along scenic local routes and pitched at three different levels.

The first challenge ride will set off from Energise Leisure Centre on Sunday 7 August at 10am. The 23 mile ride will follow a circular route taking in Tadcaster and Bolton Percy.

More challenge rides will take place on: Cyclists and yellow flowers

21 August – Energise Leisure Centre – challenging (23 miles)

Further rides will cater for complete beginners with easy going rides and medium rides allowing people to find a ride that suits their ability.

Bigger Sky Ride for York on 13th September

The York Council has announced that on Sunday 13 September 2015 Sky Ride York will take to the city’s historic streets in partnership with British Cycling.

Due to the size and scale of the event there will be a number of temporary traffic and transport changes to ensure the safety of everyone taking part.

The Route

The traffic free route has been extended for 2015 to allow residents and visitors to see more of York whilst taking in some of the city’s most historic landmarks such as Clifford’s Tower and The Minster.

The 7km route starts at Clifford’s Tower and will see cyclists head up Castlegate and Coppergate before joining onto Pavement and passing York’s most famous street, The Shambles.

Riders will then turn left onto Colliergate and briefly see King’s Square before turning right onto St Andrewgate. They will then head onto Aldwark, Goodramgate, and Deansgate when York Minster will come into view. Riders will then head across the Minster Piazza and onto Duncombe Place before passing over Lendal Bridge onto Leeman Road.

The route will then see cyclists turn right past Memorial Gardens and along Wellington Row, Skeldergate and Terry Avenue where they will follow the Ouse until Rowntree Park.

Cyclists will then head along Butcher Terrace and turn left onto Bishopthorpe Road before turning left on the cycle path to bring them back down to the river and over Millennium Bridge. They will then follow the riverside cycle path back to Clifford’s Tower.

Traffic and Travel

The Sky Ride York route will be closed to all traffic from 10.30am until approximately 5pm, or as soon as possible after the event has finished to ensure the safety of everyone taking part. The inner ring road will be closed at Lendal Bridge for general traffic for the duration of the ride.

Residents and visitors are urged to make use of the city’s extensive Park&Ride network on the day, particularly by using the Park&Pedal facilities at any of York’s six Park&Ride sites.
Bus travel

Car Parks

Castle car park will continue to be open on the day, however there will be reduced capacity to allow for one of the Sky Ride ‘activation zones’ featuring activities for residents and visitors to enjoy. A traffic management stop/go process will be in place here to assist the smooth flow of traffic. Esplanande car park will also be open and will have a traffic management stop/go system in place. St George’s Field car park will be open but will have a reduced amount of spaces during the day.

Rowntree Park car park will be closed on both Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September due to the Festival of Cycling taking place, as in previous years. For safety reasons there will be no access to parking inside the route.

Sky Ride coming to York on 13th September

City of York Council is encouraging residents to dust off their bikes this summer and register for Sky Ride York, a traffic free bike ride for all abilities on Sunday 13 September.

A circular route taking in some of York’s most historic landmarks, including The Minster and Clifford’s Tower, will be closed to traffic between 10.30am – 4pm, allowing cyclists of all ages and abilities the chance to celebrate cycling on traffic-free streets.

The route will also take in the York Festival of Cycling in Rowntree Park where riders will be able to stop off and take a look around. There’s something for everyone with have-a-go sessions, an AirBag for BMXers to try tricks on and professional cyclists will also be giving a breathtaking display in stunt cycling.

Cllr Nigel Ayre, Executive Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “Sky Ride York gives residents and visitors the rare chance to ride a stunning traffic free route around York. After the amazing turnout of over 10,000 people in 2014 I hope even more people will get on their bikes and come along to Sky Ride York.”

Inspired by the Tour de France? Sign up to a free guided bike ride in York!

With the Tour de France coming to York on 6 July, City of York Council in partnership with British Cycling and Sky is inviting residents who have been inspired by the great race to sign up to a series of free guided bike rides around the city.

The Council says, “Ahead of Stage 2 of the 2014 Tour de France starting in York Sky Ride Local offers people the chance to join organised, guided rides of varying distances and difficulties. These range from easy-going spins around picturesque parts of York through to ‘steady’ and ‘challenging’ rides, for those seeking a little more adventure.”

Sky Ride local in York this weekend at York Sport village

A series of inclusive Sky Ride Local rides will be taking place in York thanks to a partnership between British Cycling and Sky.

Rides will take place on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 October from 3pm until 5pm on the 1km purpose built cycling track at the York Sport Village on Hull Road

Get Cycling will have a fleet of adapted bikes for people to test out so everyone can take part.

Children aged 8 and above and adults can ride their own bikes, or use one of the adapted bikes.

Children aged under 8 are welcome to use tow bikes, trailers and frame seats. All riders are required to wear a helmet.
