Residents in North Yorkshire and the City of York have the opportunity to ask Assistant Chief Constable Iain Spittal about the crime and anti-social behaviour issues that matter most in their communities.

Iain, who is the chief officer responsible for delivering Safer Neighbourhoods policing, will be on hand to take questions via a webchat hosted on the North Yorkshire Police website on Friday 20 July 2012 between 12noon and 1pm.

It’s time to start working on your entries for this year’s Crimebeat Awards.

The 2012/13 competition has been revamped and features a larger age-range, two separate categories, bigger prizes and a slightly different judging structure.

Groups of young people aged between 5 and 25 can enter this year’s competition, which is split into two categories:

1. Groups independently developed and run by young people.

2. Groups set-up by an adult and run by young people.

The aim of the competition is to come up with a project which benefits the community and helps to reduce or prevent crime.

The Rt Hon Dr Vince Cable, Minister for Business, Innovation and Skills visited York today (5 July) and met with City of York Council to discuss the economic potential of one of the largest brownfield development sites in the country -York Central.

Situated next to the railway station, the site offers a great opportunity for development of a high quality, mixed use development with efficient local, regional and national connections. Focusing on York’s proven growth sectors of creative and knowledge based industries, business services and financial/insurance services the redevelopment of the site could create over 7,500 new jobs.

Network Rail have recently secured planning consent for a state of the art training centre within the site and the council are preparing a planning and delivery framework to guide public and private sector investment in the site.

Business Secretary Vince Cable said: “The Government is committed to help close the gap between North and South and encourage strong and sustainable growth across different industries. Today’s visit to Yorkshire highlights how different sectors and companies are playing their part from greener manufacturing to exports.”

City of York Council Chief Executive, Kersten England, said: “York has successfully reinvented itself from a railway and confectionery manufacturing city into an international hub for science and technology and a national centre for financial and business services. We are the third fastest growing city in the UK and we need to continue to evolve and develop our assets, such as York Central, to remain an attractive proposition for investors and competitive in industry. ”

Vince Cable has today also opened a new centre to help develop renewable products, such as chemicals, from plants at the University of York.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) awarded the university a £2.5 million capital grant to create the Biorenewables Development Centre, a pilot centre for industry and academics to work on new processes to convert plants and biowastes, such as agricultural and food waste into products, such as chemicals.

The European Regional Development Fund also invested about £1 million into the centre.

City of York Council is lining up an exciting team of sport taster sessions for all to enjoy at the Olympic Torch celebrations at York Racecourse on 19 June.

The special event will kick off at 2:30pm with a host of interactive sports displays from a wide range of sporting organisations which the public can take part in for free.

Sessions will be on offer from sports bodies including The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation, England Basketball, British Cycling, British Equestrian Foundation, Orienteering – Eborienteers, Climbing Wall and British Gymnastics.

From 5pm an evening of entertainment follows the demonstrations, with performances from Katy B, Twist & Pulse and more.

Sport sessions will be running from 2:30pm to 5pm on 19 June at York Racecourse and free tickets are available from:

With the long bank holiday weekend approaching, North Yorkshire Police is urging bikers using the county’s roads to ride safely and responsibly.

Hundreds of motorcyclists are expected to visit North Yorkshire over the extended bank holiday, to take advantage of the scenic routes on offer and while they are welcome it is important that the laws of the road are respected.

In the past six years, 79 bikers have been killed in North Yorkshire and the City of York with a further 622 seriously injured, and officers are keen to avoid any further tragedies. (more…)

North Yorkshire Police put its full support behind a European crackdown on metal theft this week.

Over 50 police officers took part in the 38-hour operation across North Yorkshire to support the European Network of Railway Police Force’s (RAILPOL) National Days of Action and Operation Tornado – a regional police campaign to tackle metal theft. (more…)
