Green burial plan for Osbaldwick?

An unusual planning application from the Osbaldwick Parish Council this week. They hope to gain permission for an area of rough grazing to be turned into a natural burial ground.

The land is located off Murton Way and has been talked about as a possible site for house building in the past.

Details can be found on the Council’s planning portal under reference 21/00415/FUL.

Derwenthorpe

Not far away, the new Derwenthorpe development has come in for some criticism from some house owners.

The development does not yet have a “completed” look although most of the homes are now occupied.

The original idea of taking traffic out of the residential areas (as they did in “Poundbury”) does not seem to have worked very well as posters have now been erected by some parents concerned about traffic speeds in streets on which children play.

The controversial district heating system still has its critics. The building which houses the heat generation system is remarkably ugly.

Some residents have even set up their own Facebook group (7) The Real Derwenthorpe | Facebook

Pollution fear over fires in east York

Concerns have been raised about fires which have been lit near the travellers site at Osbaldwick.

Although we have enjoyed better air quality in recent months, the gains made could be quickly lost of the York Council doesn’t get on top of the problem of uncontrolled burning.

As well as being a threat to health, smoke can cause visibility problems on highways.

Missed bin emptying – latest from City of York Council

The Council has published its Tuesday update on missed bin emptying and recycling collections.

It reveals failings across all types of waste collection and neighbourhoods. It is no longer promising to empty bins on the next day, but is asking residnts to continue to leave their bins out.

Although COVID social distancing requirements have influenced recycling collection performance the Council blames “capacity issues” for most of the delays.

As the first collection of garden waste has been completed, the expectation was that the second lift would have been smaller. However, it maybe that residents, who stored green waste in line with Council instructions during the lock-down period, are now filling up the bins again.

It is impossible to judge whether volume is an issue unless the Council starts to publish again the tonnage of waste – by category – that it is dealing with each week.

The Councils management must provide more information on waste management including the level of demand for booking spaces at the household waste sites and the level of use of the bulky waste removal service.

Waste service reliability was already problematic before the Coronavirus crisis hit, with an unprecedented level of failed collections during the later part of 2019.

Residents deserve to know when they can expect a reliable service to be restored?

Missed bin collections Wednesday

Recycling was not collected in part of Dringhouses today (“vehicle capacity issue”) and garden waste wasn’t collected from Muncaster (“vehicle breakdown”).

The Council also hasn’t caught up with delayed bin emptying from earlier in the week in Osbaldwick and Woodthorpe

It appears that the Council hasn’t yet placed an order for new vehicles to replace its chronically unreliable existing fleet.

According to a notice published today, a decision on a new “waste collection methodology” won’t be taken until 24th October. Even then it is likely to be several months before the Council actually joins the year long queue for new vehicles.

While refinements to waste management arrangements are needed if we are to recycle more, a greater sense of urgency from the Council leadership, in addressing current unreliability issues, is an essential first step.
