What’s on in York: Stride out on a Nordic Walk this July!

City of York Council is inviting residents to learn to Nordic Walk this July.

The council’s latest Nordic Walking course starts on 5 July and sessions will take place every Friday for four weeks from 10am until 11am, meeting at the Rowntree Park Reading Café.

Nordic Walking is a calm, social but vigorous walking style that burns about 50 per cent more calories than walking alone and tones the upper and lower body. Walking with the specialized Nordic Walking poles, residents also reduce impact on the knee joints.

Nordic walking is one of the fastest growing activities in the UK and at the end of the course participants will be given a Nordic Walking UK Freedom Card, which will enable them to attend Nordic Walking groups anywhere in the UK, including several in the York area.

The cost of the course is £30, and booking is essential at https://exercise-anywhere.com/ – places are limited.

We hold 4-week ‘Learn to Nordic Walk’ courses throughout the year.  Nordic Walking uses special poles to enhance walking style, with an upper body technique similar to that of cross-country skiing

Courses will be held from 10.00am to 11.00am on the following dates:

23, 30 November and 7, 14 December 2018

11, 18, 25 January and 1 February 2019

15, 22, 29 March and 5 April 2019

The group meets at the Rowntree Park Reading Café.

The cost of the course is £30 including pole hire. At the end you’ll be issued with a Nordic Walking UK Freedom Card, which means you can attend affiliated walking groups anywhere in the UK.

At the end of the course participants will receive a Nordic Walking UK Freedom Card, which will enable them to attend Nordic Walking groups anywhere in the UK, including several in the York area. The cost of the course is £25, and booking is essential as places are limited.

Nordic walking – walking with the aid of long poles – is currently one of the fastest-growing exercise activities in the UK. Originally developed from cross-country skiing, it is a gentle exercise, but burns 40 per cent more calories than ordinary walking and works 90 per cent of the body’s muscles. It is a safe and effective method of exercise for people of all fitness levels, and is perfect for those wanting to lose weight.

Councillor Nigel Ayre, City of York Council’s executive member for leisure, culture and tourism said: “Over the past few years Nordic walking has grown in popularity as a fun way to keep fit. Nordic walking is a great activity, which people of all ages can enjoy and can be a great way for people to take in the spectacular views of York. Hopefully people take the chance to take part in this course.”

All equipment will be provided although participants should wear comfortable clothes and sturdy footwear.
