York’s new Knavesmire junior parkrun is one of the hundreds of workshops, courses, events, clubs and activities featured in the Summer2016 edition of Shine magazine which is celebrating its tenth year

Most of the Shine programme activities are scheduled for the school summer holidays, but for those who can’t wait to get started the Knavesmire junior parkrun starts this Sunday (3 July).

The parkrun is a free, timed two-kilometre run for children of all abilities aged from four to 14 years and is a perfect fit with the expansive programme of fitness activities and sports sessions planned for local young people.

Shine activities are aimed at those aged five to 18, together with their families. The programme offers accessible opportunities to enjoy a summer of activities to keep fit, explore new hobbies, learn exciting new skills such as movie making, and shares information on how to continue sport, play, arts and activities in parks and libraries beyond the end of the school holidays.

Cllr Keith Aspden, Deputy Leader of City of York Council with responsibility for Economic Development and Community Engagement said: “Over the last ten years Shine has grown to an exciting programme of activities for York’s young people, with something to appeal to all interests and abilities.

“The schedule, which includes sessions delivered by a wide range of partner organisations and volunteers, offers young people the chance to develop skills, make new friends and engage in new hobbies throughout the summer.”

Julie Mackenzie, Event Director of Knavesmire junior parkrun said: “We’re really looking forward to helping young people get outside, get active and have fun.”

The Knavesmire junior parkrun will take place every Sunday at 9am (with the exception of race days and other events). To take part children and young people must be registered with parkrun and have their unique bar-code with them. For more information visit www.parkrun.org.uk/knavesmire-juniors.

What’s on in York: Author Don Rhodes: Bugs in Amber

York Explore Library : Thu 30 Jun : 6.30pm – 7.30pm : £3 (£2 with a York Card)

Jun 30_Don RhodesDon will speak about and read from his entertaining and varied collection of short stories, Bugs in Amber. The settings range from a Victorian workhouse to post-war Yorkshire, from pre-war Transylvania to present-day Prague. The protagonists are also diverse, featuring a newborn baby, a Roma girl, a German prisoner of war, a dead English king and a spiteful pit-pony called “Buster”.

The opening and closing stories are set in York, one describing an amusingly alternative outcome to the recent battle between York and Leicester over the reburial of Richard III, the other exploring the impact of folk memory on an important decision by a 94 year old York resident.

“Best for me was The Secret Burial for its topicality, humour and sheer exuberant use of our beautiful English language.”

“Brief Encounters gave me a fascinating insight into life on the other side of the begging bowl.”

“The Funeral Director was a passionate story….Realistically chilling.”

Whimsical, sad and funny, often all at the same time, this collection will appeal to those interested in people and the strange and marvellous things they get up to.

DON RHODES previously worked in community care and the NHS after studying English at Lancaster University and working abroad for some years. He has had several stories published in magazines. Bugs in Amber is his first book.

Tickets cost £3 (£2 with a York Card) and there are a maximum of 50 tickets.

What’s on in York: Exploring watercolour techniques with landscape and architecture

York Art Gallery : Sat 25 Jun : 10:30am to 3:30pm : £35.00

Jun 25_WatercoloursExplore landscape and architectural imagery and use a variety of watercolour techniques to paint your own pictures.

We will look at watercolour paintings in the York Art Gallery collection that illustrate different styles & approaches to landscape and architecture (e.g. John Piper, Albert Goodwin).  Using these as our inspiration, we will then experiment with the techniques we’ve observed to produce our own landscape and/or architectural images.

What’s on in York: Author Radhika Swarup: Where the River Parts

Explore York Library : Sat 25 Jun : 3.00pm – 4.00pm : Tickets cost £4 (£3 with a York Card)

June 25_Radhika Swarup _ImageRadhika is joining us to talk about her debut historical novel Where the River Parts.

Blood had begun to trickle down Asha’s starched cotton salwar, and once more she tried to will herself to stay calm. It was nothing. These things happened.

But these things haven’t happened before. It’s August 1947, the night before India’s independence. It is also the night before Pakistan’s creation and the brutal Partition of the two countries. Asha, a Hindu in a newly Muslim land, must flee to safety. She carries with her a secret she has kept even from Firoze, her Muslim lover, but Firoze must remain in Pakistan, and increasing tensions between the two countries mean the couple can never reunite. Fifty years later in New York, Asha’s Indian granddaughter falls in love with a Pakistani, and Asha and Firoze, meeting again at last, are faced with one more – final – choice

Spanning continents and generations, Where the River Parts is an epic tale of love, loss and longing.

‘A chapter of South Asian history that has often been deemed too painful to be explored fully.’ -Nayomi Munaweera, Island of 1000 Mirrors
