£103,330 boost for children in York

Liberal Democrats have welcomed the news that nurseries, childminders and other early years providers in York are set for a £103,330 cash boost to help three and four-year-olds from disadvantaged families.

Lib Dems say the extra investment could help close York’s ‘attainment gap’ – the difference in education performance between children from disadvantaged backgrounds and their peers.

Absence in York schools amongst lowest in the country

Figures released by Department for Education (DfE) show that levels of attendance in City of York schools continue to be amongst the very best nationally.

The DfE figures revealed that only 3.2 per cent of pupils in York were regarded as persistent absentees [absent for 15 or more per cent of their lessons], a reduction from 5 per cent for the same period in 2012-13.

Castlegate youth centre set for reprieve?

Opposition parties on the York Council have called in for reconsideration a plan to close the Castlegate youth advice and help centre.

Castlegate centre

The meeting will take place on 31st October and the reports can be read by clicking here

The Castlegate centre provides information, support and counselling for young people aged between 16-25 in York,

Probably the main issue concerns the proposal to transfer some youth advice services to West Offices.

It is difficult to think of a less suitable location.

The building can be intimidating, reception arrangements busy (see article above) and occasionally chaotic – despite the best endeavours of staff.

It is also noisy because of the atrium design.

The Council may wish to move the service to a more affordable location but West Offices would be a poor choice.

Walk to School Week

School pupils around York are getting ready to take Walk to School Week in their stride when it takes place from 13-17 October.

Twenty nine schools and 8,700 pupils across the city are taking part in this year’s campaign to encourage even more children to walk, cycle or scoot to school.walking bus 2

The school that gets the highest number of pupils walking, cycling or scooting throughout the week will win the coveted Jack Archer award and £400, partly funded by Age UK.

‘Scoot to School’ day will also take place on Wednesday 15. To encourage students to scoot the school with the most pupils who scoot to school on that day will win a Scooter Pod worth £300 donated by CyclePod.

It is recommended that children aged five to sixteen do at least sixty minutes of physical activity that gets their heart beating faster than usual and they need to do it everyday to burn off calories and prevent them storing up excess fat in the body.

Regular activity is also important for adults and it is recommended that adults make sure they’re active for just 30 minutes each day, or 150 minutes a week.

The scheme is also targeted at families who normally take the car, and encourages them to consider walking or cycling to school instead.

Calls for Castlegate rethink

Liberal Democrat and Green councillors are calling on Labour to rethink a decision to close the Castlegate Centre in York.

Castlegate centre

Last week the Labour Cabinet rubber-stamped proposals to shut Castlegate.

The centre was opened by the Liberal Democrat Council in 2007 and offers information, support, advice and counselling to young adults aged 16 to 25.

Under the plans, counselling services will be cut and then transferred to West Offices. An online petition urging the council to withdraw the plans has already attracted more than 350 signatures.

The Childrens Trust held a successful fund raising event today at the Foxwood Community Centre.

It is a great shame that the Council decided to withdraw their financial support from the community centre earlier in the year

Hopefully whoever is elected to represent the area on the Council at the by election on 16th October, will make one of their first priorities getting the grant – which paid for a part time caretaker- restored.

Storytelling sessions to inspire a lifelong love of reading

Explore York Libraries are teaming up with Mud Pie Arts Theatre Company, drama specialists for early years and primary school age children, to create weekly storytelling sessions.

Acomb Explore Library

Acomb Explore Library

These lively, fun sessions are based on a different picture book every week which will be explored through games and role-play for children aged two to five year olds.

Each week children will be encouraged to discover book characters and objects hidden in a specially-made hollow book, which will be used to lead the games and activities.

The session will end with that week’s story being read.

Frances Postlethwaite, Explore Library’s Children and Young People’s Librarian, said: “carer will also get ideas of fun things they can do with reading at home. Each week there will be a different story and different activities”.

The aim of these sessions is to encourage and develop a love of books and reading early in life through active participation and play in an exciting and fully immersive way. The sessions are for a carer and child

Starting tomorrow, there will be 10 sessions offered per term, with a charge of £2 per child per session.

The sessions will take place at Explore Acomb Library, Front Street, Acomb, York YO24 3BZ from 1.30 – 2.30 pm and the dates for this first half term are:
