Electric bus award nomination for York service

Electric bus on chargeCity of York Council along with partners First York and Optare have been shortlisted for an award at the prestigious UK Bus Awards.

The nomination is for the Environment category and notes the work that the council, First York and Optare have completed by creating and running a fully electric Park&Ride service from the newly built site at Poppleton, which was opened in June 2014.

Cllr Ian Gillies, Executive Member for Transport and Planning, said: “With over 4 million customer journeys a year it is clear to see that the council’s partnership with First York and Optare is benefitting residents and visitors and is now getting the deserved recognition at national industry awards. I hope we will be able to continue to build on this and help make York an even more sustainable city.”

Will Pearson, Business Manager for First York added, “We’re delighted to be short-listed for a UK Bus Award. The nomination is recognition of the positive efforts by the Council, First York and Optare to deliver sustainable transport projects in partnership that deliver high quality attractive bus services for customers.”

Robert Drewery, Commercial Director, Optare, said: “I am thrilled that the Poppleton Electric Bus Park and Ride project has been shortlisted for this prestigious industry award.  Optare is very much committed to working in partnership with operators such as First York and local authorities such as the City of York Council to deliver sustained, successful operation of greener buses.”

The electric buses that are being used for the service are helping to reduce CO2 emissions by 62 percent in real world operation according to First York data. The most recent data shows that when operating in service on York’s Park&Ride routes, the ‘Well to Wheel’ efficiency is 409g/km of Carbon emitted compared to a standard diesel Park&Ride bus at 1078g/km.

Recent figures released by the Department for Transport have also shown that over 16.2 million journeys were made on York’s bus network from April 2014 to March 2015, an increase of four percent from 15.6 million journeys in the same period a year earlier.

All the electric buses serving the Poppleton Bar Park&Ride also offer free Wifi, further boosting York’s free Wifi network.
