Time to get on top of weed growth on our roads and footpaths

With a new Council elected and most candidates committed to ensuring that street level public services are improved it is a good time to report any issues in your street.

We came across this weed infested traffic island build out on Gale Lane today.

Residents still have time to save money on their gas and electricity bills

City of York Council is reminding residents that they have until Monday 18 May to sign up the Big Community Energy Switch, where they could potentially save on average £243 on their gas and electricity bills.

The council’s partner iChoosr do all the hard work which makes it simple, safe and hassle-free for residents to consider switching their energy tariffs.

City gears up for Dementia Awareness Week (17-24 May)

Organisations across York are gearing up for Dementia Awareness Week (17-24 May) with a series of events.

The activities form part of York’s work to become a ‘dementia friendly city’ which is welcoming, empathetic and accessible to people living with dementia and their friends, relatives and carers.

Local residents will be able to get a preview of a new photographic exhibition in the council’s headquarters at West Offices, throughout Dementia Awareness Week from 18-22 May. The exhibition, entitled ‘a storylikeours’ is a positive portrait exhibition featuring and celebrating people living with dementia and their carers. A series of short films on the same theme have also been produced to raise awareness of dementia.

York Music Centre pupils enjoy regional success

Children and young people from City of York Council’s York Music Centre are celebrating group and individual successes in an Irish music competition.

The group of young musicians competed in the Northern Regional Fleadh in Manchester on Saturday 9 May and has won a place in the All Britain Fleadh, to be hosted by the Northern Region on 27 and 28 June at Meyerscough College near Preston.

St Helen’s Road – closure update

Workers seem to be making good progress in restoring the carriageway surface on St Helen’s Road raising hopes that the street may reopen later today or tomorrow at the latest.

So far Yorkshire Water have issued no statement indicating how that burst main occurred, although it is not the first time that the road has been dug up this year.
