Lendal Bridge fine repayment deadline scrapped

The York Council has agreed tonight to cancel the end of December deadline for  motorists wanting to reclaim fines unlawfully levied on Lendal Bridge.

They have promised that there will be a report in January which will confirm how the fines will be repaid “automatically”.

The decision was taken after the new Council required the Labour Cabinet to act to make the refunds.

It has also emerged that very few of the fines lodged against foreign tourists have been repaid.

The figures are:

Of the 5460 payments issued,

  • 1927 (35%) have been to YO postcodes,
  • 3531 (65%) have been to the rest of the UK, and
  • 2 overseas (0.04%).

So how many Labour Councillors did it take to change a light bulb?

We asked a couple of weeks ago why it apparently took 2 Labour Councillors to nod through a decision on protecting the Punch Bowl pub in the Groves from predator developers.

Residents wanted the Council to make an Article 4 direction on the Punch Bowl pub in The Groves. This simply means that if a supermarket or other chain targets the building then they are required to go through a full planning application process.

It took 2 Councillors, 2 meetings to agree that this was as sensible safeguard

There remains some doubt about whether the new Cabinet members have actually been properly appointed. There has been no Leader or Urgency meeting convened at which new Cabinet appointments, job titles and responsibilities might have been rubber stamped

Work to support ‘troubled families’ in York recognised

Almost 300 vulnerable families in York have received help and support to turn their lives around according to figures released by the government today (22 December).

Figures released by the Department for Communities and Local Government show that 282 families have been helped by York’s Family Focus Team, which works with families with multiple and complex needs. Their work involves resolving truanting and antisocial behavioural problems, helping family members tackle addiction or get back into employment.

Families identified as ‘troubled’ by the government are characterised by having no adult in the family working, children not being in school and family members being involved in crime and anti-social behaviour.

No rubbish collections in York this week

We have had reports that some residents have not yet received their new rubbish collection calendars.

You can access a look up table which gives details of collection arrangements for your postcode by clicking here

There are no scheduled refuse collections this week. Many residents will take advantage of the recycling facilities dotted around the City. Some are already full to overflowing. We have asked for them to be emptied.

Skips are next due to visit west York on 3rd January 2015
